The night before, Obadiah struck him during sex. He was ill. He had been feeling ill for some time. And yet, Obadiah demanded. All Elias had wanted was to be held, to have his aches eased, to feel loved by the only man that ever could. In return, he was reminded that his existence was shameful. Obadiah’s growing aggression terrified him. Love became a weapon, and Elias was willing to take the torment just to have a moment of happiness. The next morning, he woke up cold. He was sore when trying to look for Obadiah. He searched everywhere, hoping in vain that he was relieving himself or taking a walk, but he never came back. Those conflicting emotions returned, but with them carried a distinct loneliness. He was going to come back. He always came back. Elias waited every day at the boundary, waited until he could not stop crying. Days turned into weeks. Still, he did not come back. The more time that passed, the heavier the loneliness persisted. Elias waited. And waited. And waited. But soon, the loneliness became a tangible thing. It was a heaviness that was bone deep. Elias grew more exhausted. For a time, he feared that he was dying. He could not discern what was causing his fatigue, his persisting sickness. He wanted Obadiah. He wanted him to come back. He wanted his affection and comfort, even after he hurt him. And he hated himself for it. Still, he tried to move forward, even as his sickness worsened. He could barely keep anything down. It was more than just a pit in his stomach. Something was within him, growing inside him. It was living off his life source. It settled there, a foreboding weight. He feared it.

In fact, he seemed a fuck of a lot more worried about Sabbat, which didn’t seem entirely fair – *he* wasn’t the one with something living in his eyesocket, even if his legs didn’t work right at the moment and even if it felt like there was something cold and ice-bright curling around the bones of his thigh and climbing up along his hip and spine and ribs and *fuck* it had to be the silver, didn’t it, had to be the silver from the woods where they’d killed those Sinnlenst, the silver from Avebury’s room, the silver from the traceries twisting over and over around that godsdamn box, and if he didn’t cut it out before it reached his heart then it’d wrap around him and drag him down and drown him in that endless plane of dark water under the blood-clotted stormcloud sky…

Niclas sighed. “Once we both show better progress, she’ll go easier on us,” he said after she was out the door. “She’s not the one I need to prove anything to,” I reminded him with a mutter. “I’ll be in Balhreid after I put this shit away.” “I’ll cover for you.” I stalked into my room, hauling the chest behind me. There was nowhere really to stick it than right against the far wall. But the more that I moved my body around in all sorts of angles shifting and hefting shit around, the more uncomfortable my torso felt. Grumbling in frustration, I tore off my robes, wrenching with the bindings. The wrappings were too tight. I could feel it in the way my chest ached whenever I tried to breathe in. I had a broken mirror in my room, and I used that to try and help me fix them. My eyes lingered a little too long on my body, making me drop the bandages. I never liked what I saw anymore. I would always first look straight at my left breast, right over my heart. There was a large, jagged burn mark there. A brand. I didn’t remember how I got it. The Trethians must’ve done something to me while I was wounded, marking me as something dead for them to desecrate. I had many other scars, too, like the one on my face. They were all marks from failed spells, wounds from the skirmishes, sparring matches between the other mages gone wrong. Things like that. But they were everywhere. My skin was marred with dark, vein-like patterns. They were on my legs, as well. One of my hands moved to my waist, and my fingers stroked each individual scar. They shook a little too much when lingering on paler marks near my waist and hips. That was enough insecure self-molestation for one day.

For thousands of years the Alliance of the Nine has stood without conflict. All of its peoples, be they Dragon, Elf, Dwarf, Wyldkin, or Human, are able to live the lives they desire with their needs met. None are considered greater than another, and no path in life is considered beneath respect. Until 200 years ago, when another wave of Humans suddenly arrive in this world from another. These people bring with them their One True God, their Savior, along with a fear and rejection of the peoples of the Alliance, their Gods, and all that they stand for. After a city is built for them, they lock the gates and send out only a few of their number every seven years to convert any they can to their ways. Now the Sovereign of the Alliance, in a bid to draw these Faithful into greater society, has finally managed to secure their participation in the All Gods Festival. In exchange however he must send his only daughter as an envoy to the Faithful’s Holy City. And so Roderika, First Daughter of the Alliance, will travel with her childhood friend Arlo in the company of a Sister of the Church to Megiddo, Bastion of the Faithful. Her partner Tala and magic tutor Henet remain behind in the Alliance Capital, suspicious of the Faithful's sudden cooperation and determined to learn more. But all is not as it seems. Hidden machinations march the world ever closer to an event that will shatter a millennia old peace. Towards… The Night of Fallen Gods.

The visible upper part of the noble’s body was pale and slender, unburdened by any scars or signs of physical activity, and his wheat-blond hair spilled over the edge of the pool. “Valir.” Kraghtol’s voice broke the distinguished silence like an axe, but he couldn’t care less about the disapproving looks of the other patrons and bathing servants. It had the intended effect, though, and Valir opened his eyes.
