Authoritarianism doesn’t spare anyone. It feeds on passivity. The longer people wait, the stronger it gets. Act now and everyday.

Maybe someone hipper than me can translate this Walter Benjamin quote into vibes era speak? For the good of the voters.

Good to know that. I haven't been following them close enough to catch those

Oh hai sounds like the concentration camps are starting to ramp up.
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

Vital reporting from @ellenbarry.bsky.social and Jason DeParle:
In Utah, Trump’s Vision for Homelessness Begins to Take Shape

I checked usatoday's general coverage of Trump back in the spring and was surprised to see they were providing more objective reporting than any of the other outlets i was reading then. Subscribed soon after. Happy to see that's continuing.

So you should really watch this. Just 2 minutes. But a window into the truly radical nature of the people Trump is nominating.

When pressed today, the nominee to be Ambassador to South Africa refuses to oppose reinstituting laws to prevent black people from voting in America.
Some interesting poll numbers about Virginia voters...
New polls from Gallup, YouGov, and out of Virginia show voters now trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle the economy. Nationally, Dems now have a 4-point margin on the issue — an 18-point shift away from Trump since 2023. Time to update your priors

The issue that sank Democrats in 2024 now threatens to do the same to Republicans in 2025 and the 2026 midterms

There is a little food pantry in front of the Presbyterian church on Angus Rd, Church of Our Savior on Rio has one, any more ideas?

In the midst of a government shutdown, and in the face of fundamental challenges to the rule of law and to democratic accountability, the House of Representatives--the people's house, the heart of our democratic republic--hasn't cast a vote since Sep. 19. An extraordinary failure of responsibility.
If nothing else, don't we owe it to the fine people of Maine who aren't into Nazis to give them a choice on the ballot that isn't: guy with Nazi tat vs the American fascist party's candidate?

Just a reminder that — in the middle of a shutdown — House Republicans are on a paid vacation solely to avoid releasing the Epstein files and lowering your health care costs.

They are getting desperate for warm bodies. You don't do this if you are anywhere close to having anywhere near enough personnel for your tyranny.

This directly undermines their efforts to purge the military! If they're beating protesters or kidnapping migrants, they can't be used to hunt leakers!

Johnson's power to keep unilaterally extending pretend "district work periods" for as long as he doesn't want the House to meet isn't some longstanding traditional power of the Speaker. It's a new thing he's abusing in a novel way.
The House gave the speaker recess authority (‘when no question is pending’) in 1993.
As for adjournment authority (‘at any time’ during a district work period):

Cato put out this brief statement from me critical of U.S. military strikes on suspected drug running boats, strikes that kill those aboard "without trial, legal process, or public accountability." These extrajudicial killings would be unlawful, I observe, even if all the smuggling claims were true.

“Repatriate”? The word the far right uses for kicking out immigrants, in particular naturalized citizens (plus their citizen descendants)?

So does that mean the lethal strikes on civilian boats in the Caribbean targeted migrants? Because if it was really drug traffickers, wouldn’t just let them go.

The very same billionaires who funded Trump's campaign have seen huge increases in their wealth and power since he took office.
