I'm delighted to have a post up on apersonalanthology.com/category/deb...

Huge fun to think about favourite short stories, very difficult to choose. Many thanks to @jonathangibbs.bsky.social, curator of this rather wonderful website.

😆 …and how does the program *know* that excellemy is a real word? Unless it *thinks* it’s a name?
Just awful.

Picket Fire is a small literary press, but I have no idea how to use Blue Sky or how to find people on here. So if #writers #authors #readers and anyone related to the #writingcommunity or #books community could help by sharing this post, that would be excellent.

A question for Times columnist Sebastian Payne:

What is this cheaper source of "energy" that you speak of?

The world's energy experts would like to know…

We are in the foothills of a solar-wind-battery civilisation. This is our best chance of avoiding catastrophe. But it threatens the profits of fossil fuel companies & nations - so these are pouring money into right-wing populism to stop the transition. This seems to me the biggest story in politics.

I think Germany knows what could happen, because of the past... in Britain people are in denial, they think it couldn't possibly happen here. Just bizarre. It can happen anywhere, as history shows.

I still have not cruised past Judge Young's ruling in American Association of University Professors v. Rubio. This 89-year-old Reagan appointee zeroes in the most horrifying reason why ICE must be abolished: www.courtlistener.com/docket/69784...
Block quote: And there’s the issue of masks. This Court has listened carefully to the reasons given by Öztürk’s captors for masking- up and has heard the same reasons advanced by the defendant Todd Lyons, Acting Director of ICE. It rejects this testimony as disingenuous, squalid and dishonorable. ICE goes masked for a single reason -- to terrorize Americans into quiescence. Small wonder ICE often seems to need our respected military to guard them as they go about implementing our immigration laws. It should be noted that our troops do not ordinarily wear masks. Can you imagine a masked marine? It is a matter of honor -- and honor still matters. To us, masks are associated with cowardly desperados and the despised Ku Klux Klan. In all our history we have never tolerated an armed masked secret police. Carrying on in this fashion, ICE brings indelible obloquy to this administration and everyone who works in it. “We can not escape history,” Lincoln righty said. “[It] will light us down in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation.” Abraham Lincoln, Second Annual Message to Congress (Dec. 1, 1862).

Highlighted line: ICE goes masked for a single reason — to terrorize Americans into quiescence.

We always used to do that in school. A half hour of reading, no excuses. Also, teacher reading us an exciting adventure book on Friday afternoons (primary school). Also, if you had finished the task given to you and were sitting with nothing to do, you had to read a book.

Thank you! I wrote the earliest draft in about 2014/15.
