I Don't Do Sci-Fi - the podcast series, Season 2, Episode 3: "One's never alone with a rubber duck." Dani watches The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. The main image is a montage and of people and things from the BBC TV adaptation of The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams (1981). In the centre is a disgusted/perteberd man wearing a dressing gown over pyjamas - this is Arthur Dent (played by Simon Jones). Beneath him are written the words: This is of course impossible. Surrounding him are: a yellow fish - the Babel Fish, an animal's head on a platter with an apple in it's mouth - this is the Dish of the Day, a tablet-like device - the titular Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (on it's screen are the words: Don't Panic!), and mouse, a weird-shaped glass with an exotic drink - this is a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster (which drinking it is like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped round a gold brick), a neon sign for 'Milliways' (The Restaurant at the End of the Universe), a multi-armed alien - a Jatravartid holding a few deodorant spray cans, the logo of Disaster Area - generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also the loudest noise of any kind at all, a mathematical symbol for infinity(?), two fried eggs on slices of bread, a roughly humanoid-shaped robot - Marvin the Paranoid Android (who has a brain the size of a planet - thinking down to our level gives him a headache!), a squadron of red, and green arrows in formation representing space fleets of the G'Guvuntts, and the Vl'Hurgs, the words 'forty' and 'two' in circluar/wooden tiles laid out like Scrabble, a sperm whale, and a pie-chart split into 3 equal looking sections: Thinkers, Doers, Middle Men. Finally, in large, friendly, pink letters: Don't Panic in the background of it all!

41 years ago, The #Tripods arrived on BBC1. To celebrate, we've great pleasure in spreading the word that film-maker Charlie Francis has a treat in store. Coming October 1st, short film 'When The Tripods Came Back' takes a fond look at the Tripods40 celebrations.

They might be a bit tame by modern standards, but John Christopher wrote two post-apocalyptic trilogies for Young Adults which I loved as a teenager. The first two Tripods books were made in to a tv series by the BBC.

In addition to ‘The Weirdstone of Brisingamen’ which a couple of people have already mentioned and which I loved reading at school; I’d also recommend two trilogies by John Christopher suitable for Young Adults:

The Tripods and Sword of the Spirits, both had a Puffin issue back in the day.
Three book covers by John Christopher in the Tripods series. The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire. Three book covers for a series by John Christopher. The Prince in Waiting, Beyond the Burning Lands and The Sword of the Spirits.

The text/logo for I Don't Do Sci-Fi - The Podcast Series, Season 2, Episode 2. A 2nd text box underneath says: Centuries beyond anything as crude as television. Dani watches Star Trek: The Original Series.

The image behind these text boxes are a collage of co-host John Isles dressed as a 'Redshirt' (THE most unlucky colour uniform to wear in TOS) from Star Trek in 8 life-threatening, perilous situations based on original artwork by Ron Embleton (with thanks to Captain Scarlet for Redshirt workplace hazards guide): crawling out of a pile of rocks, sinking to the bottom of the sea, weighed down with chains, and with sharks circling, a pile of wooden crates tumbling down to land on him, tied to a tree in an alien jungle with a three-headed snake menacing him - an "Aldebaran serpent", falling out of the open door of a Starfleet shuttlecraft as it flys through space,
about to be crushed between large metal spikes attached to walls closing in on him - he is pushing with all his might against them, knocked over by a tank - that's driving towards him, finally falling from a skyscraper to be squished on the ground far, far below (with laserbeams passing by him).
