Trudged through the snow to get back to some folk horror, but this time from Finland with The White Reindeer from 1952 for my #31DaysOfHalloween. It plays like if Nanook of the North was a horror fairy tale. Some great visuals and atmosphere.

David Simon is always a real one.
Also, what the hell, Ari Shapiro?
junoryleejournalism.com
David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

I went with the classic Evil Dead 2 for this #31DaysOfHalloween film. To quote a great music and film scholar - “It’s a brilliant film. It’s so funny and violent, and the soundtrack kicks fucking ass.”

Tonight’s #31DaysOfHalloween was Starve Acre, a moody folk horror with top-notch acting and score. It’s maybe too much of a slow burn, but it definitely flipped the script a couple times. I may have to check out the book it’s based on. Bonus points for creepiest bunny rabbit since Donnie Darko.

Oh, dang. Apparently this is streaming on Shudder now. Finally going to get to watch it.

It’s on the list. Trying to determine if it’s as childhood-shattering as people say to see if the kid can watch with. I didn’t have cable growing up, so I completely missed it back in the day.

Watched a 35mm scan of this Video Nasty list-maker for my 6th #31DaysOfHalloween. Decent-looking scan, but Don’t Go in the House wasn’t that great. Psycho but with a flamethrower instead of a knife. Which sounds way better than it is, unfortunately.
Dude in a flamesuit with flamethrower ready to flame on.

It’s on the list. Honestly annoyed that it’s never streaming anywhere without rental fees. The Blu-ray goes from crazy money.

Family movie night at the house, and of course the #31DaysOfHalloween is still in full swing so we went with a new kids classic “spooky” special. If you’re a fan of the Muppets or the ride at Disney, you should definitely check out The Muppets Haunted Mansion.
Fozzie Bear all decked out like Headless Hattie, but totally dying on stage!

It is morally wrong to want a computer to be sentient. If you owned a sentient thing, you would be a slaver. If you want sentient computers to exist, you just want to create a new kind of slavery. The ethics are as simple as that. Sorry if this offends

It feels weird to say that a movie featuring an 8-foot-tall naked zombie with, erm, quite the blessing flopping around is absolutely beautiful. But Danny Boyle did it again with 28 Years Later. Possibly better than any of the other films in the series. Day 4 of #31DaysOfHalloween for me!
Dudes just running like hell in shallow water from a big naked zombie.

The end is maybe the “best” part, but you still made the right choice.

Nice! I’ve been picking through the Shaw Bros box sets from Arrow at the library. Amazing restorations, but sometimes too good. You can actually see the spirit gum lines around the wigs.

Woof, I picked a stinker for #31DaysOfHalloween. House of Eden (starring, written, and directed by that girl who is always in my Reels with the videos where she plays a kid by holding up baby doll hands in front of her face) does a whole YouTube Blair Witch update with nothing new to say. Less even.
That girl who is always in my Reels with the videos where she plays a kid by holding up baby doll hands in front of her face but she in a bathtub being scared.

For my second #31DaysofHalloween watch, I tried Spider Labyrinth from 1988. It’s a pretty decent giallo flick with a Lovecraftian twist that kept me interested. Also, a wild creature at the end! (Not pictured here because that would be spoiling.)

Ok, going to try for a #31DaysOfHalloween watch. Kicking it off with 1982’s The Thing by John Carpenter, my first or second favorite horror movie, depending on what day you ask me.

ER doc here! This is a lie. Wait times are up because the American healthcare system is an unsustainable business model and a for-profit national healthcare system just doesn’t work. These problems will continue to get worse until we change that system. It literally has nothing to do with immigrants

Vance: "If you're an American citizen & you've been to the hospital in the last few years, you've probably noticed wait times are especially large & very often somebody who's there in the ER is an illegal alien. Why do those people get healthcare benefits at hospitals paid for by American citizens?"

Sometimes I envy them. Wouldn’t it be exciting to watch something that you are actively scared to watch? I guess that’s my idea of exciting and not theirs, though.

I can't get over how the right-wing doesn't understand modern militaries, with the majority serving non-combat roles. You think the best IT security & logistics personnel spends two hours in the gym every day to look like the cast of 300? They're at furry conventions and model train shows.

Hegseth: "I don't want me son serving alongside troops who are out of shape or in combat units with females who can't meet the same combat arms physical standards as men"

I would think that looking around and seeing that the other people on stage with you are transphobes and sexual abusers would be enough, but then taking money directly from journalist-murdering regimes? Money is a hell of thing.

After weeks of travel, I’m back to seeing enough films for a #lastfourwatched #letterboxdfriday. Knocked out some Shaw Brothers classics, the Satanic panic season of Gorley and Rust, and the astounding One Battle After Another. Going to be tough between this one and Sinners for fav film of the year.
