The period where the IDF were firing machine guns at people trying to pick up bags of flour was one of the most despicable things I’ve seen in this country: every day for weeks, people behaving like something confusing and hard to understand was happening, because they couldn’t say what they saw.
The soldiers who agreed to talk confirmed the IDF's routine use of human shields, contradicting official denials, and gave details of Israeli troops opening fire unprovoked on civilians racing to reach food handouts at the militarised distribution points set up by the US-and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). "In basic training for the army, we all chanted 'means, intent and ability'," Capt Yotam Vilk, an armoured corps officer, says in reference to the official IDF training guidelines stipulating that a soldier can fire only if the target has the means, shows intent and has the ability to cause harm. "There's no such thing as 'means, intent and ability' in Gaza," Vilk says. "No soldier ever mentions 'means, intent, and ability'. It's just: a suspicion of walking where it's not allowed. A man aged between 20 and 40." Another soldier, identified in the programme only as Eli, says: "Life and death isn't determined by procedures or opening fire regulations. It's the conscience of the commander on the ground that decides." In those circumstances, the designation of who is an enemy or terrorist becomes arbitrary, Eli says in the documentary. "If they're walking too fast, they're suspicious. If they're walking too slow, they're suspicious. They're plotting something. If three men are walking and one of them lags behind, it's a two-to-one infantry formation - it's a military formation," he says.

Academic freedom is a widely discussed concept recognized as a key element of the academic system. While the intrinsic value of academic freedom is widely recognised, there is limited empirical evidence demonstrating its impact on research productivity and the quality of scientific output. This study examines the relationship between academic freedom and scientific performance using a global panel dataset covering 119 countries from 1996 to 2021. Research quality was measured using two field-normalized indicators: the mean field-normalized citation rate and the proportion of a country’s publications among the top 10% of most cited papers. Linear mixed-effects models reveal that academic freedom at the country level is associated with the citation impact of future papers published by researchers from a country. These effects are robust across multiple time lags (2, 3, 4, and 5 years). The analysis also shows that the positive effect of academic freedom on citation impact is primarily evident in countries where academic freedom is already at moderate or high levels. These results reinforce the idea that academic freedom is not only a normative ideal but also a structural factor that supports high-quality science.

Pretty wild to me how many people when realizing their linear mixed effects models do not converge with appropriate random effect structures, reduce the random effect structure until convergence and then very confidently use the inferential results to make far-reaching claims about nature.

When I say replication crisis is rhetoric, this is what I mean. It uses scientific resources and tools for rhetorical purposes, not scientific. Many do this knowingly, intentionally bec they believe it is necessary and no other approach will fix science.

That's too cynical and hubristic for me.

I talked about why the replication/reproducibility crisis is, and has always been, rhetoric, rather than fact. Masking scientific progress in general in favor of a simplified crisis narrative has caused a lot of epistemic, ethical, and practical harms so far. We can and we must stop feeding it.
