The period where the IDF were firing machine guns at people trying to pick up bags of flour was one of the most despicable things I’ve seen in this country: every day for weeks, people behaving like something confusing and hard to understand was happening, because they couldn’t say what they saw.

You don’t raze entire towns and cities street by street with controlled demolitions and bulldozers for any military objective. You do it because the aim is to wipe those places out of existence forever, and it’s not like they’ve been hiding this.
Inside Gaza, BBC sees total devastation after two years of war
With endless rubble and destroyed streets as far as the eye can see, any plans for Gaza's future are a far cry from where it is today, writes Lucy Williamson.

We love a good 'association as as fluid' metaphor, but this guy takes it to the next level.

12/10 for the reminder that conditioning on a collider doesn't just mess with your identification; it can also flood your basement.
I built a DAG diagram with garden hoses for teaching.
Pictured: a collider bias diagram, inspired by a blocked pipe situation I experienced (which I credit with giving me the intuition though it also ruined my belongings in the flooded cellar).

It’s astonishing how many researchers seem to believe that a cluster analysis is such a sensible analysis that it needn’t even be justified through a coherent research question. Just cluster analysis go brrrrr

We wrote an article explaining why you shouldn't put several variables into a regression model and report which are statistically significant - even as exploratory research. bmjmedicine.bmj.com/content/4/1/.... How did we do?

Pretty wild to me how many people when realizing their linear mixed effects models do not converge with appropriate random effect structures, reduce the random effect structure until convergence and then very confidently use the inferential results to make far-reaching claims about nature.

When I say replication crisis is rhetoric, this is what I mean. It uses scientific resources and tools for rhetorical purposes, not scientific. Many do this knowingly, intentionally bec they believe it is necessary and no other approach will fix science.

That's too cynical and hubristic for me.

I talked about why the replication/reproducibility crisis is, and has always been, rhetoric, rather than fact. Masking scientific progress in general in favor of a simplified crisis narrative has caused a lot of epistemic, ethical, and practical harms so far. We can and we must stop feeding it.
In twenty minutes, I'm giving a short talk that I titled:

"Reproducibility crisis is not real, but it can hurt us"

How's that for therapy?!

All of this is so much at odds with how science is commonly viewed and judged today: Focusing too much on individual papers, immediately wanting to classify results as true/ false and performing research activities we think will help us do so (e.g., replications), >>

This is actually what is going to happen.

That’s already what’s happening in Lebanon. Israel kills regularly, violates the ceasefire agreement on an hourly basis.

It’s just not on the news anymore.

This is why pressure against Israel mustn’t just continue, but increase.
