the category error most generative AI defenders make is that it doesn't make them better artists, it makes them worse patrons of the arts

this is a fascinating concept that looks far more like something I would expect to see coming out of Laconia

Can anyone name me one thing GenAI has truly made better? Like fundamentally better? Not slightly easier to do, but actually, final end product better?

Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.

the larian stuff sucks to hear a lot. you have to be a true all-timer loser to think generative AI is useful for concepting ideas or artwork. you let the machine do the fun part you dumbass. it doesnt tell me you think efficiently it tells me youre a fuckass who's given up on being interesting

i get the sense that ppl who are super into AI think that AI skeptics are only against it for moral reasons, which is part of it (and is also true for me). but another issue i have with it is that it is actually bad at what it is supposed to do, with no way to improve (look up "AI plateau" for info)
just to see what would happen i asked gemini AI to write something in my writing voice (goodness knows there is plenty of it online to check against) and it was absolutely nothing like me at all. idk if this is comforting per se but it was very funny to me

A year ago, one of the plot holes in Neuromancer was that RAM was incredibly expensive.
one of the funnier aspects to the AI backlash is the fact that they're negatively polarizing much of the tech enthusiast demographic against them by making hobbyist PC building functionally unaffordable
Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

I'm taking advantage of The Expanse's 10th anniversary to praise the effectiveness of this universe's introduction. 🔥

First, there are a few explanatory sentences, then the prologue about the protomolecule and the season mystery, and after the title, there is this absolutely fabulous...
