Diplomatic dude. I know a little about international economics. I once explained the electoral college on Mongolian TV. Climate change believes in you. Vaccines are good, actually.

It's like Asimov's "Nightfall" except instead of the stars driving us insane, it's social media...
I just finished Pip Williams' novel "The Dictionary of Lost Words" and that is one of the best things I have ever read. It's going to stick with me.

Discworld QOTD, from Interesting Times

“‘Am I alone in thinking, by the way, that it doesn’t add to the status of the University to have an ape on the faculty?’

‘Yes,’ said Ridcully flatly. ‘You are. We’ve got the only librarian who can rip off your arm with his leg. People respect that.’”

This is the first Thanksgiving for Sophie & Colin Hortman without their parents, Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman who were assassinated along with the family dog in an act of political murder. National guards troops were not deployed to the state in response.

I had my first ever go at one of those round table talking heads sort of shows, and promised myself ahead of time that I wouldn't turn into a shouting head.

And then one of the panelists said something utterly silly... I didn't shout, but you might be able to hear my eyeroll.

Gutting US counterterrorism and federal law enforcement capacity was a bad idea.

Sorry to get so partisan. I know the president wants to see more political violence in the US, and thinks it's important for federal forces to prioritize crackdowns on nonviolent, noncriminal migrants. I just disagree.

How Republicans commemorated Thanksgiving in 1869--with a multi-racial/multi-ethnic gathering of people at a table with a centerpiece celebrating universal suffrage and self-government, and with an engraving of Castle Garden, the pre-Ellis Island point of disembarkation for immigrants.

The old American saying "if you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" has it exactly wrong, as we see vividly illustrated by the wealthy, malevolent actors hell-bent on destroying every public good that has made the US prosperous...they're rich, but only "smart" in a reptilian, predatory way.

Universities don't exist to take orders from corporations as if we're short-order cooks, tasked with delivering up the latest labor market fodder, hot & fresh, over easy.

We educate humans to human. In the 21st century, that's a huge and complex job: there's so much to know & so much garbage info.

and the US officials who keep saying so are repeating Russian propaganda
NEW: Data on Russian forces’ rate of advance indicates that a Russian military victory in Ukraine is not inevitable, and a rapid Russian seizure of the rest of Donetsk Oblast is not imminent. Russian advances elsewhere on the frontline have been opportunistic and exploited seasonal weather. ⬇️🧵
