Our country in the south Pacific has been battered by high winds, the kind of weather events that climate change makes worse, yet still the NZ Govt is part of the climate obstruction team. Subsidies to fossil fuels in a climate crisis - madness. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
‘Change course now’: humanity has missed 1.5C climate target, says UN head
Exclusive: ‘Devastating consequences’ now inevitable but emissions cuts still vital, says António Guterres in sole interview before Cop30

Rā Whakamana: Thousands unite for tino rangatiratanga and workers’ rights

BROKEN NEWS: Finance minister Nicola Willis is claiming that Labour introducing C.G.T will cause spontaneous combustion. Her other hyperbolic claims are that you will get shit weasels in your arse and everyone's hair will fall out so we all look like Luxon #NZPol

Not only is AI going to fuck up human-human trust, there’s a very good chance it will crash global markets too.

Such fun 🙄
There's been endless talk about an AI bubble, but less about exactly how, why, and how much it's a bubble. So I turned to the framework put forward by scholars Brent Goldfarb and David A. Kirsch, authors of "Bubbles and Crashes," for assessing tech bubbles.

Spoiler: On a scale of 1 to 8, AI is an 8
AI Is the Bubble to Burst Them All
I talked to the scholars who literally wrote the book on tech bubbles—and applied their test.

Labour, the party of incremental change.

Bailing NZ out of trouble one thimble of climate change induced flood water at a time.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

So much thimblism so little time.

Thanks @bernardchickey.bsky.social
Labour just went for CGT-lite. It won't raise much money & won’t change the incentives in our housing-market-with-bits-tacked-on economy. It’s focus-group-hugging performative politics. It tells low wage renters flying to Australia: not much will ever change. It says; ‘Fly my pretties. Fly’. #nzpol
Tuesday's Chorus: Where's the solar & batteries? And a proper CGT?
30% of dairy farmers in Southland & Otago still without power five days after wild winds flattened power poles; Locals surprised & farmers scramble for diesel generators; Labour goes for CGT-lite

Better than nothing but still completely milquetoast and disappointing

Would have preferred a wealth tax sold on the fact that it targets the super rich.

This will be painted as taxation on "hard working Kiwis" and Hipkins had better be prepared to defend it

Labour to campaign on narrow capital gains tax, no wealth tax
The party has agreed to campaign on a capital gains tax covering just some property to help fund a limited number of free GP visits.

So my concern is not about artificial intelligence taking jobs. It’s about artificial intelligence, causing harm in our society and our communities because people erroneously put these systems in positions where they can make damaged decisions with no real oversight.

It's so reassuring that our govt, a govt responsible for the agrarian economy within this famously volcanic, windy, sunny, tidal, archipelago, known for its creativity and innovative response to challenges, has chosen to prioritise fossil fuels when everyone else is investing in renewable energy.

For context: Total cost of all reparations paid to Māori for land confiscations to date = $2.7 billion

Total cost of the economic lunacy of this government reinstating mortgage interest deductions to landlords = $2.9 billion (over 4 yrs), plus $760 million every single year thereafter

Also can't afford social housing, but can afford to write-off money already spent on land, planning and consents for them, and afford the negative social impacts of one of the largest percentages of unhoused people in the so-called developed world.

People forget that when the survivors were fighting for a Royal Commission into State Care under John Key's government, Anne Tolley the then Nats MSD minister said there would never be a commission and the only reason we have it at all is that Jacinda Ardern formally launched it in 2018 #NZPol
