Watched THE VOURDALAK (2023) the other night and it is easily the best family-horror allegory about the crushing pressure of patriarchy starring a vampire puppet that I’ve ever seen.

The comic-book version showing the suit in action really did a number on me when I read it as a teen.

True, probably had to get through all the rest of that month’s games on the weird hooded camera/monitor setup publications relied on back then. No time for someone to fumble their way to Level 3 when a paragraph about buying a game at a toy store takes roughly 30 seconds.

Excerpted lede from a 1984 review of Donkey Kong Jr. that reads: “While strolling through a local Toys R Us store, I chanced upon a Donkey Kong Junior cartridge hidden amidst some unwanted Cabbage Patch Dolls. Hurriedly whipping out my wallet, I bought the game and rushed home. I slammed the cartridge into my trusty old 800, flipped the power switch and was greeted by a nice title screen and a rambling tune.”
