Stick with games journalism long enough, and you too may someday see the creator of your favorite childhood game promote your work!

For #PrinceofPersia fans, Ubisoft has posted a series of articles and interviews with team members (including me) reviewing the games' 35-year history, what's new and what's coming next: news.ubisoft.com/en-us/catego...

Just thought about licking the screen during a Fulci movie and now I’m nauseous

If you want style for days, you need Italian horror. I want to lick the screen every time I see a Bava movie.

You'll never be as cool as Denzel leaning on a 1940s car with The Griffith Observatory as a backdrop.

Devil in a Blue Dress has so many great shots and this entire scene is maybe my favorite.

Threw on the new Criterion of NIGHTMARE ALLEY 2021 and forgot that the reappearance of Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen makes this the Catalina Wine Mixer of Guillermo Del Toro's oeuvre.

Difficult, yes. Impossible?

Also yes.

If you want to be happy for the rest of your life
Make the cast of “Pretty Woman” your wife
So for my personal point of view

Watched THE VOURDALAK (2023) the other night and it is easily the best family-horror allegory about the crushing pressure of patriarchy starring a vampire puppet that I’ve ever seen.
A Serbian peasant family and visiting French aristocrat gather around a table and stare at the camera in a scene from the movie The Vourdalak The peasant family’s patriarch Gorcha, who has returned to them as a mummy-looking vourdalak, stands with his musket in a scene from the movie The Vourdalak

Super happy to find out the comics got a reprint a few years ago. I spent years looking for volume 3 after it went out of print.

The comic-book version showing the suit in action really did a number on me when I read it as a teen.
A comic page from The Forever War vol. 2 shows a space shuttle partially exploding in orbit.
PANEL 1

I SAW THE HORIZON SWING
BACK AND FORTH WHEN THE REAR OF THE SHUTTLE EXPLODED.

PANEL 2
Close-up of a space helmet spattered with blood, the wearer’s head thrown back in pain

SUDDEN AGONY AS SOMETHING CRUSHED
MY LEG—

PANEL 3
Close-up of a space suit leg where a bladed cuff has closed, amputating the leg at the thigh

--THEN MORE PAIN AND A SHARP SNIP AS ONE OF THE SURGICAL SECTIONS OF MY SUIT CLAMPED ITS SCALPELS
OVER THE STUMP.

PANEL 3
The shuttle continues to explode, appearing to clip a rock formation as it descends

CAUTERIZATION...
AUTOMATIC TRANSFUSION..
ANTI-SHOCK...

PANEL 4
The shuttle runs aground

A TASTE OF LEATHER...
4 SCARLET MIST THAT ERASED EVERYTHING...

Darkness with a burst of red at the upper left corner

IT WAS NOT VERY SERIOUS.

Item 3: A copy of the unreleased sequel to The Dark Backward, which somehow contained dramatically edited footage of me discovering the turned stomach and its contents only moments before. My attorneys have begun legal filings.

Tribute band called The Beadles but they do covers of songs from Oliver! and all dress like this guy:

COPY EDITOR: Great work but I think you can lose this bit about reaching for your checkbook and carefully signing your name before handing it to the smiling cashier, whose casual grin hides a life of torment and deep Cabbage Patch Kid-related trauma. Also our house style is ‘Dolls,’ capital D.”

True, probably had to get through all the rest of that month’s games on the weird hooded camera/monitor setup publications relied on back then. No time for someone to fumble their way to Level 3 when a paragraph about buying a game at a toy store takes roughly 30 seconds.

No shade to a pioneer of this new field of criticism 41(!) years ago, but I can’t imagine “where and how did you, personally, acquire this!?” was top of mind for many readers even then.

(OK, maybe some shade.)

I thought maybe the “unwanted Cabbage Patch Dolls” [sic] line was maybe trying to say it was an old game, but no, it had come out that June for Atari 800.

“I found this at a store and bought it,” what an absolutely weird way to start a game review.
Excerpted lede from a 1984 review of Donkey Kong Jr. that reads:

“While strolling through a local Toys R Us store, I chanced upon a Donkey Kong Junior cartridge hidden amidst some unwanted Cabbage Patch Dolls. Hurriedly whipping out my wallet, I bought the game and rushed home. I slammed the cartridge into my trusty old 800, flipped the power switch and was greeted by a nice title screen and a rambling tune.”

I got flu & covid, no side effects at all other than a couple days of lingering soreness in my arm. Almost disappointing.

Is that the one where the RAM would disconnect if you nudged it, crashing whatever game you’d just spent 5 minutes loading from a cassette tape? We had the US version when I was little.
Memed photo of a staring chihuahua double-exposed with helicopters in Vietnam, as though the dog is caught in a paralyzing PTSD flashback.
