In a world of disaster capitalism, be a rebel: ride a bicycle and buy your clothes 2ndhand from charity shops.

Also, all the best people have trees in their bio.
Now tell me, where will your next bike ride be?

I might look deeper into that.

Oh, Spotify is horrible! They don't pay ANYTHING to over 80% of artists. It's a massive rip-off business that nobody should use.
January 18, 2026 at 8:11 PM
Yes, but there are gotchas:
I can't list all my routes on the same map, and I don't have voice turn by turn navigation in the app.
A better fit might be bikemap.net

Facebook can get stuffed, and I wouldn't miss that at all.
Bluesky is US-based, but I use Mastodon alongside BS, so switching to just Mastodon wouldn't be a big deal.

It's important to remember that trade needs shipping and 6 of the top 10 shipping companies are European (with Denmark having the biggest ships). Even the US Navy can't force them to bring goods to US ports. The economic consequences of a hostile grab for Greenland will be catastrophic.

of course the RideWithGPS bunch are genuinely nice.
However, I need to ask myself what position I'll be in, should the Orange Gimp pass a law mandating US-based services to be blocked, or become ridiculously expensive.
January 18, 2026 at 7:37 PM
Platforms I need to move off include Gmail, Strava, Google Drive, Google Photos, and Google Maps (which I sometimes use when driving).
I don't subscribe to Microsoft cloud services (eg 365) so that's easy.
I also don't use Spotify.
RideWithGPS, however, is difficult. I'm ultra-reliant on it, and

Graphene is superb, but yes, using it will stop banking apps running.
January 18, 2026 at 7:28 PM
Really sad that the Orange Gimp is determined to destroy the USA's standing in the world.
January 18, 2026 at 7:27 PM
My focus is limited to US-based tech services.
My Android phone will keep going without that, and I don't even have to use the Play Store, if I didn't want to.
January 18, 2026 at 7:25 PM
Yeah, banking apps also won't run on rooted Android handsets, so if you're reliant on banking apps, you're limited to either stock iOS or Android.
I'm not fussed about staying on Android though.

I used to be quite a Strava junky, and I know exactly what you mean by it spoiling rides.
The entire Must Go Faster mentality ignores so much of what is excellent about cycling.

- Tariff US oil and LNG
- Crack down on tax avoidance by US multinationals operating by imposing common EU withholding taxes and shutting down Dutch and Irish loopholes
- Sanction individuals linked to administration

- Use regulations eg resilience standards to prompt European investors to rebalance away from US
- Ban Trump-friendly US crypto exchanges from Europe
- Pursue de-dollarisation by incentivising euro-denominated transactions by firms and expand ECB swap lines

- Tighten export licences on crucial European machinery & component exports to US eg aerospace, automotive, defence
- Restrict US participation in European AI
- Mandate public funds to reduce US Treasuries holdings (about $1.5 trillion of US debt held in EU)

- New taxes and regulatory (eg IP, patent, "equivalence" rules) restrictions on US service providers operating in Europe

[1/6] A reminder: Europe has cards to use against the US. Lots of them.

To cite some examples:

- Tighten screws on US digital giants (taxes, fines, even bans)
- Export taxes disrupting US supply chains eg pharma
- Exclude US firms from European procurement, inc defence

Maybe I wont try these trousers on...
January 18, 2026 at 5:39 PM
Yeah. I'll be installing the community edition of Anycloud, and stop relying on syncing pics to Google Photos.
Instead, they'll sync to my own server.
Email I'll slowly move off Gmail.
Strava I'm not even slightly fussed about.
January 18, 2026 at 7:03 PM
I'm not proposing a boycott of US products. I simply don't want to be reliant on US tech if (when?) they cut off access.

Driving is a privilege, earned through assessment and retained via acceptable standards.

Why should such people ever be allowed to lawfully drive again and share the road with victims?

We would never return a firearms licence to someone who unlawfully used a gun to kill. Why is driving different?
A driver doing 50mph in a 20mph limit killed 27 year old Harry Webb two years ago in Kenworthy Rd in Hackney.

Communities rightly remember people killed on roads, treated as race tracks, by people speeding through.

We all need to be clear that speeding is harmful and a risk never worth taking.

No, I'm referring to US-based services, such as GMail, plus more. Also Strava.
While there are millions of genuinely good Americans, overall, the USA is fast becoming a full-blown fascist state. I can't be doing with relying on fascist tech.
