Infrastructure should not be for-profit
Pinned
Pinned thread for my attempts at "EnergySky protection class" - I'll be going through various protection topics and relay types as I think of them, for anyone who's interested in knowing about one of the grid's lesser-discussed features. Hope it helps!
Let's be honest they did it because they'd been planning to retire it for years and keeping these old plants open ESPECIALLY after you've started deferring maintenance and laying off staff is expensive as hell

In which I realize I've been mixing up REs and RTOs again, for some reason I always wanna cross those

I feel like I need to get back around to the thread I never actually wrote

So I think a lot of people remember the blackout of 2003 but I wonder how many are aware of what happened on June 28th, 1998. Because that might actually be an equally important date for understanding Why Is the Power Grid Like This #energysky

I'll take a look!

Like of all the monstrous parts of the way the grid extracts profit from people the REs are a lot lower on my list I suppose. But maybe that's a part of it I'm naive on
January 17, 2026 at 12:57 AM
Hm, maybe. I've no particular affection for the system, working for a TO though the REs seem to fill a necessary niche of forcing all the for-profit utilities to plan collectively and get along more or less, rather than always just choosing their own best interest to at least some degree
January 17, 2026 at 12:56 AM
When you're talking about the major moneymaking enterprises it's the utilities, the GO/TO/DPs like FE, AEP, ComEd, etc - not the REs like PJM or MISO. You could argue the REs are overly deferential to the utilities but they're not regulators in that sense, really
January 17, 2026 at 12:50 AM
I'm not sure about your argument on this one - PJM doesn't own anything, and if you're going to have a for-profit system I would argue it's better that both of those things can make money because ideally the same company doesn't own both

Hey folks Calvary Food Shelf has been helping out people in Minneapolis for 30 years, and now they’re ramping up to meet the crisis, including doing home deliveries so people don’t have to risk going out.

They’re just over halfway to their current goal—let’s get them all the way, shall we?

In this grid version, now instead of neighbors, you are literally either a buyer or a seller. The person next door is your customer or you're theirs. It's a completely miserable dystopia.

And I say this as an engineer who spends most of his time on maintenance of microprocessor relaying equipment - no matter what tech bros tell you, more microcontrollers is ALWAYS worse than fewer.
January 15, 2026 at 4:49 PM
The focus is always on "well with the microgrids you don't have large blackouts" and what gets missed is that the good thing about a big blackout is you get ALL HANDS ON DECK - you absolutely will not for your single neighborhood with a shit microcontroller
January 15, 2026 at 4:48 PM
"well the utility could own the DER and then they'd have to fix it" ok and just how good do you think that response time is going to be? How many electricians and techs for all that distributed equipment? How do you set those rules about response time? Do you REALLY think that's going to be better?
January 15, 2026 at 4:46 PM
Every time I read about how rooftop DER and microgrids are going to be the future I think about the communities who won't be able to afford to replace something, or who will get de-prioritized in favor of larger loads and richer areas despite supposedly having equal access. School districts.
