This is why I always get so mad about movies that portray characters getting instantly frozen when they are exposed to outer space.

It leads to fundamental misunderstandings of how reality works that are so pervasive, nobody even checks at any level.
This would have been a good point for someone to have asked, is that really how things work? Or is vacuum in fact an excellent insulator? www.ft.com/content/a5cf...

There are, it’s just that like mastodon, no one has heard of them or understands how they work.

One to check out is matrix.org

It’s a protocol you can host on your own site. Users make accounts somewhere that is compatible and can join yr chat server.

This is starting to get like universal basic income where every single objective study shows the same result but the people who don't like that result go "uh, well there's just really no way to know"

"Don't worry about the Discord thing, it's only NSFW servers and channels that will require age verification! :)"

I could remove every speck of risque imagery/topics from my community and there's still a 50% chance we'd get flagged just because we're openly queer.

It's not actually about the kids.

This is a hypothetical. My dog is not traumatized or terribly reactive, but people just fucking skate through life, man.

If our species didn’t have folks with anxiety, I swear we’d still be living in caves, man.

Something that people don’t understand about dogs is that just because yours has excellent recall and is super friendly, that doesn’t mean they can just be off-leash wherever.

Sometimes your bouncy off-leash dog gets up in my traumatized, reactive dog’s face and what then, huh?

I get the impression that’s what mastodon is, sort of, but they’ve done such a godawful job marketing it.

A protocol for discord would work where you host your server on one of many providers, but anyone with a username from any provider could join it (either with invite-only or public servers)
February 9, 2026 at 8:35 PM
Email is a protocol. You have email providers, but no one cares about that. You have your friend’s address, you send them an email.

Why isn’t there a protocol for discord? Instagram? Twitter?

No platform, just different providers. You can move providers without being beholden to one company?

Oh, it's far worse than that. Society as a whole realized the harm - potential and direct - almost immediately.

It's just that the people that run the world decided, even as the corpses piled up, that they just didn't care and were going to bet the entire global economy on radium toothpaste.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Lmao *sun. Not sub. Goddammit Kenz, read yr tweets.
February 8, 2026 at 3:34 AM
Also don’t have the sun be in two shots in a row that are looking in different directions.

Jeeeeeeez.

If you are working on the VFX for a fantasy movie — never, ever add god rays from the sub to your shots. It *always* looks terrible.

Anyway, I’m watching Wicked 2.

My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

I do everything on a Mac Studio. It’s a beefy boy and I got it like two years ago and since Tahoe there’s all these little problems. Drives me insane.
February 7, 2026 at 6:55 PM
Maybe even 26.4. From what I’m reading some of the performance stuff is being improved and it should be out soon, but there are still visual glitches.
February 7, 2026 at 6:54 PM
I honestly wouldn’t bother. I don’t even really like the new look that much.

There’s some quality of life junk I enjoy but not enough that I can even remember it right now, lmao.

Wait till 26.3 whenever that is.

I wish the effects on your use of energy, AI, water, etc had a direct impact on your household. If so everyone would be MUCH more conservative
I’m not arguing with no account defending AI. My grandmother lives in an area being environmentally compromised currently by an ai data center. I remember the color of the lake before they built it and the sludge I see in it when I go to see her. Shut the fuck up about “the benefits of AI” forever.

MacOS Tahoe has severe memory leaks, causing even new, strong machines to suffer debilitating performance issues.

What's the over/under on this new OS having been "vibe coded" by some jockey with chatgpt?
February 7, 2026 at 3:19 PM
Someone should write an article about the 2000s indie rock scene — that cringe inducing era of heartfelt and deeply sincere guitar stuff — and how it represents the self-immolation of millennial idealism. An entire genre of “oh yeah, it’s just not gonna work out for us, huh?”

Not just in Alberta, but throughout Canada, by legislating two-tier health care. @djclimenhaga.bsky.social writes. #abpoli

The culture around book making and what is and isn’t “legitimate” is interesting.

If you self-publish a novel you’re looked at with pity, but copypastas get optioned into Hollywood films.

Webcomics aren’t “real” comics, but there are webtoons with more readers than a Spider-Man issue.
