Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

It's obvious to anyone who's been that Wingate & Finchley's ground is a death-trap.

When Dulwich played there, the same wall collapsed when someone leaned on it. When the chairman was told their ground was unsafe, he came into the stands and tried to fight the crowd.

There's a lot of things that are disgusting about this story, not least the way it's been completely ignored by sports journalists.

If the FA had done their job and changed ground regulations the last time this happened, Billy Vigar would still be alive.

Former Arsenal striker, Billy Vigar has passed away following a significant brain injury after being placed into an induced coma earlier this week.

The injury was caused when he collided with a concrete wall during a match.

Devastating. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
