Very much this. I think there is a particular culture of upper middle class carpet bagging in high profile jobs that explicitly rejects local vernacular knowledge as having any value - you see it a lot in journalism but also roles like school superintendents and nonprofit ED's.
An interesting thing about the East Coast journalism bias is I'd argue that much of the East Coast media corps came from flyover country and left.
The bias comes from the rejection of their home terrain and trying to adopt the ... social mores of the rich people who run media.
