The hardware store and the bookstore and the garden store and my dentist and the grocery store are all walkable from home but also not close to each other.

I'm also used to stringing a bunch of errands together to make the most of each car trip (we are a one-car household with two, soon-to-be three drivers), so some of it is also logistics of carrying groceries and whatever else is easier in the car.

I live in one of those walkable Mpls neighborhoods (Longfellow) and, if I have one errand to somewhere I can walk to (let's say the hardware store or I have a book to pick up at Moon Palace), I'm more likely to walk, but if I have more than one destination then I'm more likely to take the car.

I do wonder if some of it is also, we think of "walking" as a recreational activity vs. a means to run errands or get stuff done. Possibly related to the point you made about a lack of destinations to walk TO (vs. a walk out and back from home).
