Soz I missed you at Te Papa with Duncan Sarkies. I was there but I'm Deaf and the soundsystem didn't work for me. Couldn't understand a fucking word even when I was trying hard. Loved Sprigs and the Waiheke one. Never knew what was happening except dread.

But this was at a time when house prices wasn't an issue. Labour 4 still held a massive state house stock, while NZ's population actually shrank in 1986 as NZers fled. Also the NZX still resembled a stockmarket.

Back in 1985, when the old man was doing the second to last major tax reform (the one before Caygill), I asked him about land tax. He told me that the existing scheme was widely avoided, paid fuck all to the Treasury and was more effort to enforce than it brought in.

That is the stance the Fourth Labour Govt took, for good reason. The neoliberal point being that you didn't have to own the asset when you get to write the laws that govern them. The problem since then is that we've had shitty governance.

What the state can do is commission good infrastructure outcomes. It does not have to design, deliver or operate the investment. Funding and commercials is the tricky stuff. Ends x

That's a fair point. The Community Services Card is a similar example. Even Louise Upston isn't fiddling with that card. Finally, a Labour policy that is defensible.
