When I talk about how not only is it a beautiful thing to be warned about potential violence and how to keep yourself safe- but that all people should *expect* clear and detailed expectations of actions- this is what that looks like.
🚨 IMPORTANT THREAD 🚨

People are protesting the Broadview ICE facility tonight. This will likely be an extremely high-risk action. I caution you to consider your risk level before attending. I will not attend.

Attendance risks your safety, but also the safety of Broadview residents + detainees. 1/6

When autocratization is reversed: episodes of U-Turns since 1900
The world is in a “wave of autocratization.” Yet, recent events in Brazil, the Maldives, and Zambia demonstrate that autocratization can be halted and reversed. This article introduces “U-Turn” as ...

A good reason to try to avoid getting Covid!

Wear a mask when you're indoors or in a crowd to save yourself and others this sort of pain (not to mention Long Covid)
Razor blade throat
Molten lava throat
Swallowed glass

All fun and games til your throat is spasming and you can’t swallow AT AT ALL (hello, spit cup) and the ER Dr tells you to tough it out, it’s just pain and gives you oral pain meds which you can’t actually swallow.

The Covid throat is torture.
When she told me
her throat was killing her
I gently reminded her
that “razor blade throat”
is a symptom
of one of the new variants,
but she shook her head
and insisted it wasn’t like that
instead it was like
she had swallowed glass,
and in response
I just said: oh.

I’m not going to tell people how to feel about protests… at least not today.

Instead, I’ll recommend Sarah Schulman’s book about ACT UP. It’s not just a history of the organization; she also talks strategy in a very practical way, especially regard coalitions.

A doctor has been serving one of Baltimore’s poorest neighborhoods for decades — and if his patients can’t pay, that’s OK with him.

So when he was diagnosed with cancer, his community rallied to raise $100,000 for his treatments.
For decades, a doctor refused to charge patients who couldn't pay. When he couldn't pay, his patients came to his aid.
When Dr. Michael Zollicoffer was diagnosed with two types of cancer, his patients started a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $100,000.
