This administration is just stupid and ham-fisted enough to do a stupid conspiracy-theory-style thing like activating a CIA-trained Afghan to shoot some National Guard guys so they can justify kicking out all Afghans, including all the ones who helped the US (by getting trained by the CIA).
This was two days ago.
The folks at @afghanevac.bsky.social have in hand a new USCIS directive which largely targets Afghan refugees who fled the Taliban in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

In case you needed a reminder that the most loathsome people in the world work for DHS.

Great news! I wonder if we’ll ever be able to get it here in the US, or if I’ll have to work it into a trip itinerary.
Brazil approves the first vaccine against dengue. The disease killed 6000 Brazilians in 2024.

This is a really remarkable achievement. I got dengue in 2015, and even with the mild case I had, it was a really miserable experience.

Oh god that spot on my thumb twinges just reading this
I was at the ER the night before Thanksgiving/early hours of Thanksgiving last year with a family member, and we overheard two doctors call that block of time "The Night of the Mandolines" due to the sheer number of sharps injuries during meal prep.

Low on the list of AI-driven harms, but I’m really getting sick of all the emails from fake book marketers (and currently from someone impersonating author Holly Black). The ones about my out-of-date guidebooks are stupid, but the faux fan mail is just mean.

Wow we were weird about bacon 20 years ago. Just came across a recipe from that period that was equal parts Brussels sprouts and bacon. That’s it.

So now they’re going to be doing individualized re-review of tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees’ cases on TOP of the re-review of 200,000+ refugees who entered under Biden?

Oh god I feel sick. Just last night chatting with the Afghan guy whose visa I sponsored, feeling like he’s in an ok place legally and might be able to keep his head down and ride this whole administration out.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity

Lots of people sharing this clip because it's funny and cathartic but I also genuinely believe it's important.

We have to win the narrative battle between "I live in a corrupt society and that's just how it is" and "I live in a corrupt society and we are going to defeat and humiliate these ghouls."

One of this administration's missions is to strip words of all meaning.
US State Department Debases Human Rights Diplomacy www.hrw.org/news/2025/11... At least, instead of calling it "human rights report", could the Trump administration call it something else like "US-allied Policy Report" so that you stop serving more and more damage to those fighting for human rights?

Ah yes more online services plus a dash of predatory ones like check cashiers.

Why should poor consumers be restricted to online-only food delivery services?
Okay, but those services don't have to be provided by a *grocery* store. Pharmacies (including online ones from all the major players!) exist. So do gas stations. So do check cashiers. Etc...
Cheap delivery is not an adequate replacement for a physical store.

Grocery stores provide a range of services, not just food. And that’s assuming online delivery provides sufficient access to food. And there is no reason that poor consumers should be captured by an online-only service.

An eerie amalgam of many of my kitchens. The tile in an old apartment, those metal canisters up until v recently (I think they were my mother-in-law's, a wedding gift). Still have orange descoware and those same clamp-top jars. Have *not* adopted Joan's hair ribbons, which look like a fire hazard.

National parks have SO MANY people from other countries (since they get real vacations!)

And they spend a lot of money on hotels, food, souvenirs, etc.

This is unbelievably dumb, it will destroy entire tourist towns
