We had congressional hearings when parents just suspected heavy metal was leading some kids to suicide.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides

The 5th generation family farm? Yes.

Real estate speculators? Yes.

The nice hippie couple with an organic passion project? Yes.

Shareholder-owned companies? Yes.

The sweet little widow renting her family's acreage out? You bet!

Farm tax breaks are the grand unifying theory of rural economics.

I think what people mean by this is "Isn't it just the Bill Gates types & real estate speculators who farm for the tax breaks? You know, not 'real' farmers?"

That's sweet. But alas, no.

If there's a tax break for farming, you can bet that everyone who possibly can is using it. EVERYONE.

There are so many property owners in this country who are perfectly willing to farm around breakeven, or even at a loss. Just to collect tax breaks.

And that explains a lot about US agriculture.

Naturally, people have questions!

Key detail: a lot of these small/med family farms rent out their land to someone *else* to farm. That way the owners collect the tax breaks on their property, without actually having to farm.

In that case, they still wind up growing bulk commodities like corn, soy, hay, wheat, cattle, etc.

Yes, that includes small family farms.

The median small family farm comes in at $116K annual income and over $1.2M net worth. AFTER farm debts & expenses.

That puts the median small family farm household around the top 1/3 of the US for income, and the top 15% for wealth.

Here's a great place to start: US farmers have made more money than non-farmers every single year since 1998.

Yes- *after* you take out farm debts & expenses.

Sources I used to make the graph: ers.usda.gov/sites/defaul... , ers.usda.gov/sites/defaul... for data for 2020 onward.

A couple weeks ago I said "Hey, subsidies aren't why the US grows so much corn & soybeans!"

People got mad & demanded an explanation, so pls enjoy. Buckle up bc this is NOT your the standard-issue "we just gotta fix the Farm Bill!!" situation.

The Founders knew *exactly* whom they were preparing their baby to throw down with and they built it up damn well for the job. It's doing way better than it ought to at over two centuries.

Federalism, juries, free speech extremism.

It's all driving Dear Leader off the wall insane with frustration.
it's an inconvenient truth that US federalism is one of the biggest structural blocks on Trumpism and if much of Bsky had its way it would be gone
I have some issues with Cuban. But having Musk or RFK Jr running everyone’s health insurance to the last detail gets a lot of people killed.

And the retort can’t just be “Mark, why are you asking us how to fix that?” 1/

He wanted his writing to conjure senses other than sight, so these kids would be able to get into them better.
