The New York Times is easily manipulated by a political crackpot who offers them an "inside story" that's "remarkably candid." There's a bizarre mentality in journalism: "If they agree to an interview with me, that shows good judgment!"

When they talk about freedom, they have always been specifically talking about their own freedom and that of people like them, and not everyone’s liberty. Their freedom is entirely compatible with you being clubbed in the teeth by a policeman in space marine armour, and at some points depends on it.

Yeah, if you read the actual comments on Brian Harrison's tweets most of them are giving bots / blue checks. But what matters is that his posts "go viral" among Texas legislators, in Greg Abbott's office, and crucially, among Texas A&M regents, who are addicted to their phones.
“Went viral” is an old stock phrase in journalism that really does not capture the dynamic of how X dot Com has been tuned to give people like the one specific legislator here the power to intentionally cause this kind of outcome
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.

This is in reference to the unjust firing of Melissa McCool, but it’s true of every right-wing harassment campaign

Universities and elite media need to be aware of this
It did not "go viral". It was intentionally filmed and disseminated using a network of coordinated bots, amplified by an algorithm designed to spread this kind of content quickly. This was a harassment campaign, intended to silence everyone. Call it what it is.

Here, as ever, “empowering educators” is clever code for administrators dumping another problem on teachers and saying “here, you deal with this.”
We know students, like the rest of the world, are using AI. Teachers need to be equipped to deal w/all the issues AI creates. Our approach starts with maximizing safety & privacy and empowering educators to make educational decisions, so AI tools can benefit not harm www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
AI has become the norm for students. Teachers are playing catch-up.
At a New York City training session, educators explored how artificial intelligence could support teaching while also discussing their concerns around the technology.

The American hate state is targeting people who speak up about the crimes committed against children in the residential schools.
They are bringing the full power of the state to target the finances of people who call out out the liars.
@mark-carney.bsky.social this is a line they cannot cross.

look at how little effort it takes for someone on the conservative grievance circuit to destroy a life

millions of college kids have half assed an assignment at the last minute, you eat the F and move on

but the effort to push trans people out of public life will use whatever it can get
Worth noting that the student admits that she just threw the thing together in 30 minutes without reading the paper she was supposed to be responding to.

No university should penalize a graduate student for a successful grading appeal absent discriminatory animus. An abject abdication of the institutional mission in Norman. At some point at this rate, places like Texas A&M and Oklahoma will totally cease from being universities at all.

ICE is obstructing criminal prosecution of sex crimes against children
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare says "that ICE raids have affected nearly a dozen criminal cases his office was pursuing, including sexual assaults of children, because victims and witnesses were either deported or refused to participate in trials because they were undocumented."
As ICE ramps up deportations, Texas prosecutors say they’re losing key witnesses in criminal cases | Houston Public Media
District attorneys in Harris, El Paso and other counties say some cases, including murders, have been hobbled or lost because witnesses were detained, deported or too scared to come to court.

so cool! now when I commit high crimes in flagrant violation of international law, all I have to do is refuse to talk about them on camera, and then, since they couldn't get "both sides," I can avoid an embarrassing news report on them! amazing system. A+
Bari Weiss this morning on the 60 Minutes segment: "We need to be able to get the principals on the record and on camera."

Of course, most journalists know that oftentimes people who are the subject of negative reporting don't want to speak on camera or on the record.

I just don't understand how or why academics are citing papers that don't exist. First, you should know by now that LLMs make things up, so if you for some reason found it that way and then
didn't double check the citation is real, you are simply an enormous rube.

And this is not a limitation of LLMs that can be solved by feeding them more data - as far as I can see, it is a permanent structural limitation of technologies of this kind

For some reason, people struggle to understand that indexing is precisely the sort of task LLMs *can’t do*, for the same reason they can’t solve complex equations - rather like cold-reading mediums, they’re good at vibes but fail when exacting precision and accuracy is required
