Reporting from the streets of #WarRavagedPortland where today's terrifying activities included a kindergarten playdate with juice and snacks at a park. Things got ugly when one kid got stung by a bee and another stubbed their toe. Troops please send more juice boxes.

As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway

Trump says he’s authorized Hegseth to use “Full Force” against Antifa in “War ravaged” Portland
At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Ok @npr.org now do one for drivers on "How to not hit people with your car." Tired: blaming pedestrians and bikers for getting hit by people driving cars. Wired: safer road engineering, better bike and ped infrastructure, slower speeds, fewer giant vehicles, & less distracted driving, to name a few.

(shouting into the void): Hey geographers! What happened to the #geosky feed? Did it disappear? It isn't showing up in my list anymore. Did the geographers go somewhere else? I already deleted Twitter some time ago.

Portland State U historian @catherinemcneur.bsky.social is doing a very cool series of local history posts on TikTok. Portland folks will be especially interested in them, but so might many others out there. This one is about the horseshoe courts in Laurelhurst Park.

Horseshoe tossing was the pickleball of 100 years ago. Are we overdue for a horseshoe revival or do you think the city should repurpose these spaces? #portland #portlandparks #historytok #history #hi...

Anyone know of any other moments of celebrating nature like this? Where it’s part of local culture? I’d be interested to hear of them.

Amazing Swift show tonight in Portland!
Every year migrating Vaux's swifts gather by the thousands and roost in chimneys like this SE Portland elementary school. And neighbors come out to watch them and cheer them on. It's a true delight.

I feel like Portland loves a good group-crowd enjoyment of nature as part of the city's culture! The cherry blossoms at the downtown waterfront in the spring are similarly a crowded spectacle.

The National Academies' response to the EPA's proposed removal of the endangerment finding is out today. It does not mince words about the effect of GHGs on the climate. Kudos to the authors.

HUGE: The Trump administration will no longer permit any solar or wind projects on federal lands unless they produce more energy-per-acre than coal, gas or nuclear power plants.

Solar and wind literally produce less energy per acre, so simply this may just kill off any project on federal lands.
Interior Order Chokes Off Permits for Solar and Wind on Federal Lands
The department creates a seemingly impossible new permitting criteria for renewable energy.
