The original Mavis Beacon was, curiously, also a very good typing tutor.

It’s my last name and I still haven’t forgiven myself for failing to lock “alladi at gmail” even though I was one of the first 1000 Gmail users in the world

so ורד (vered) is Aramaic for rose.
while the orphanim is a poetic pun on both the english transliteration ophanim, a type of angel, and personal and esoteric connotations of "orphan". even if the Hebrew for orphan is יתום or "yatom" but yatomim doesnt make the pun work

I’ll make them a five course meal. Seriously. The people we sent there deserve everything.

it's genuinely striking how these people will not only be completely, utterly morally bankrupt racists in public, but also expect everyone else to agree with them when they say this shit. uh yeah I would absolutely let an innocent man with a "mom" tattoo crash on my couch

Poor thing. Do you feel alienated? Maybe you could fuck right off to Poland.
Phrases like "relinquish whiteness" turn people away from liberatory movements. Think about what that sounds like to the average white person who is unfamiliar with basically everything. This just sounds like racism to them. If you want more help, meet people where they are and lead them.

Are we still doing this in the year of our lord 2025

The WhatsApp chats are exploding with commentary on Durandhar. This movie sounds disgusting. My mother hated it. So did my brother.

This also Metafilter’s business model.
I think one of the lessons that the huge success of congestion pricing in NYC is that charging a nominal upfront fee- even one far less the the levellized cost you are paying for elsewhere- is very good at cutting off the bottom 5% of bad behavior that makes things worse for everyone.

Films in Criterion Channel’s “Black Debutantes” list.

“This celebration of pioneering Black women who made an impact with their very first—and in some cases only—feature film reveals a rich lineage of artists whose works open up into fascinating dialogue with one another.” boxd.it/QUx1W

That's why it doesn't matter if bluesky is an "echo chamber" because it's a critical mass.
"Kavanaugh Stop" went from a skeet on here to Bluesky meme to crosspollinating over on X to Brett Kavanaugh's burner account seeing it there to a whiny defensive footnote about it in a decision by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Juice.
Check out the Kavanaugh FN 4; I think it's pretty clear that the Kavanaugh Stop thing has gotten to him:

The Bari Weiss hysteria continues. Exactly what in "this piece isn't ready" and "try harder to get comment from the administration" constitutes the death of American journalism? www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

This is an immune system response. Young millennials learned to do this during the lead up to the Iraq war … maybe our current darkness will give rise to a new generation of tech savvy people.
it’s really fucking cool to see people working outside the system to expose the hacks running all of our crumbling institutions

With the 60 minutes leak, the many recent Epstein releases, etc., I think we are seeing the future of government accountability under authoritarianism:

Leaks, hacks, data dumps, releases of big document caches.

Journalists and the public will have to learn how to digest this stuff. 🧵
