there's been an instinct among elected liberals for the past ten years of "we can't risk escalation" and all it's done is allow Republicans to escalate to the point of armed insurrection *and beyond* without consequence
there's a through-line in my mind (probably pigeon superstition tho) from the Malheur fiasco to this, where it seems like the Dems really do believe there's enough agitated right-wingers ready to start shooting that they need to walk on eggshells to avoid a civil war
