Hello to anyone new! I write fantasy stories about loving broken things. My most recent book was The Map and the Territory, a post-apocalyptic picaresque about a cartographer and a wizard trying to get home in a shattered world haunted by a death goddess.

We need many kinds of story right now--stories that show us that cruelty can be fought, and stories that remind us that kindness isn't wasted; stories about suffering and stories about comfort; stories that show how to form community and how to resist and how to take joy in everyday moments.

It’s really hard to describe to people who are not artists how survival mode does *not* inspire creativity, as the myth would have us believe. It suppresses creativity as you try to limit every possible risk – and the opportunities that come with them.
