Dear journalists:

The President has not fired Lisa Cook. The President is *trying* to illegally fire her.

Your words shape people’s reality. Please be accurate in your reporting.

Not enough people understand the impact Gamergate has had on our society. We probably don't quite have the politics and administration of today without it.

YIMBYism is wild because you start to ask questions like “why was single family zoning created?” and “are our regulations for building safety based on any actual safety data?” and soon realize that ~85% of the rules governing our cities are based on nothing but tradition and vibes.
We went through this with zoning, and now we're going through it with building code: trillion dollar industries depend on these things, yet a bunch of precocious bloggers can swoop in and expose these institutions as full of pseudoscience. Does nobody do their job? @aarmlovi.bsky.social

As someone who doesn't drink, let me tell you. NO ONE is telling me that people who drink beer with their friends are bad people.
JD Vance: "Our culture sends a message to young men that you should suppress every masculine urge ... my message to young men is don't allow this broken culture to send you a message that you're a bad person bc you're a man, bc you like to tell a joke, bc you like to have a beer with your friends."

We got to this place because we failed to settle scores and we failed to punish the wicked.
If we ever do get power back, there's going to be a lot of people who're going to urge restraint: no score-settling, no counter-purges, what have you. And that will sound sort of reasonable in a "let's avoid an entrenched tit-for-tat" way. In practice? Everything needs to be on the table

sam’s thread helps clarify something for me, which is the underlying theory behind trump’s action. trump does not see himself as a president in a system of shared authority, he sees himself as sovereign, with unchecked authority over everything.
I see some suggestions, in the reporting regarding the OMB impoundment order, that a mere delay in spending appropriated funds is legal. But that's not really true. The delay OMB has ordered specifically contradicts the Impoundment Control Act. A thread.

People don't hear this enough, but SOF is vastly overemphasized. They're enablers that function to help provide advantageous conditions for line units in the same way intel does.

If people want to talk about the DOD focusing on core warfighting tasks, deemphasizing SOF is something to talk about.

People have very strong opinions on the phrase "revolutions are usually bad things that lead to destabilizations and widespread violence, and maybe we shouldn't glorify it and make sure it only happens when it is absolutely necessary."

DAMMIT NPR.

I spent nine months upgrading over TEN THOUSAND desktops at a F500 client. The grand total was over SEVENTY THOUSAND applications upgraded.

Y2K "didn't live up to the hype" because the industry busted ass to duct tape everything first.

Salk: Well thank God

Me: Of course they will grow up

Salk: Well I hope so

Me: And get old

Salk: I guess?

Me: And eventually vote for lunatics who will try to stop your vaccine

Salk: what now

Me: And leave NATO

Salk: shit

I'll never understand people who glorify violent revolution. Today, I saw an entire thread glorifying the Reign of Terror. I wish people recognized that far, far more of your neighbors would be hurt in such a scenario than the oligarchs.
This is not wishful or optimistic thinking on my part because I think a U.S. with a lot more violent insurgency is going to be a bloody nightmare that will harm a lot of people who aren’t rich or powerful.
I think MAGAs and their oligarch supporters really haven’t fully reasoned through “we’re going to make Americans as poor and desperate as possible to turn them into peasant vassals, but we’re also going to make sure they can still get lots of guns.”

i think that the people interested in recriminations and score settling right now aren’t seriously grappling with the magnitude of what happened and the implications for the rest of our lives. most of us will probably die living in the political order that will emerge out of this election.

Not only chose him but gave him a mandate. There was no discrepancy between the popular vote and electoral college. This was the majority of Americans unequivocally saying they want mass deportations, abortion bans, wide-reaching tariffs, and isolationism.
This is worse than 2016, when the country sort of stumbled into Trump, not fully knowing what he was.

This time around America knew what he was and chose it anyway.

The AI transcription tool Whisper hallucinates in a large fraction of its transcripts.

It's been used for 7 million medical transcripts. People want to use similar text to transcribe bodycam audio for police reports.

Both are among the WORST applications of the tech.

Whisper is a popular transcription tool powered by artificial intelligence, but it has a major flaw. It makes things up that were never said.
