I used to focus on left versus right. Now I’m much more worried about the money at the top. But while it might seem strange to say it, I think this is a hopeful way of looking at the world that opens the door to coalitions that seemed impossible before. My first for the @newrepublic.com:

Your reminder that Trump fired the Democratic FTC commissioner, @bedoyausa.bsky.social, who had devoted particular focus to grocery store prices.
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

No veo como el conflicto eterno entre la izquierda y la derecha nos llevará a un mejor futuro. Hay que enfocarnos en el poder adinerado que va por encima — y daña — todos los demás.

World Series tickets now start at over $1,000.
In 1992, they were $24 which is about $50 today.
A beer at the game now costs more than a 1992 seat.

I can't stop thinking about @bedoyausa.bsky.social's essay this week. It is a story-forward account of why the American people are struggling. (Hint: political economy.) It's the kind of account that makes an ethnographer swoon. I can't recommend this enough: newrepublic.com/article/2011...

This is disheartening. The corporatization of of our supply and distribution chains has squeezed us. We can’t be squeezed anymore. The death of freedom comes with monopolies and hopefully we haven’t gone too far down that road.

Made my way through this article this morning. Definitely worth a read.

Seriously, when you reflect on the problems folks face (even the racial tensions), they’re a symptom of being crushed by the owning class and what they tell us to value.

Fortune 500 firms regularly pay 0 in taxes. Unions protect just 1 in 10 workers. And CEOs parade like modern-day Roman emperors, in private jets, to private islands, with their private Praetorian firefighters and guards. while government agencies built to check corporate power are being torn apart.
