Bernie can get attention any time he wants, which isn't dependent on him holding office. If he hadn't run for reelection he could still get that attention and do his advocacy, while a younger replacement could cast the same votes, and that replacement might perform endurance stunts in the Senate.

I can understand the "thing is the right fight to pick" argument, and am even sympathetic to it. But you can't say that and then NOT PICK ANY FIGHTS.
