after getting over the initial shock I got a follow-up "oof" remembering he was just in the Sly Stone doc talking about how white rock stars get to grow old and comfortable

Never forget that D'Angelo is such a huge nerd that he only ended up writing a song for Red Dead Redemption 2 because he was already an unpaid playtester for it

He deserved to grow old. He deserved the space to be more creative and share more art w/ the world. He deserved to be adorned in praise while he was still able to receive it in the physical. Luckily, music and spirit is eternal.

RIP Michael Eugene Archer aka D'ANGELO. 🕊️

i think it has a lot to do with the fact that people want the illusion of being witty/funny/insightful online, which i believe stems from the early fb/twitter eras
fascinated by the impulse to not cite online. text memes —at their first essence screenshots with credit removed— are viral with “omg who said this?”

if something moved you, how does citation take away from that fact? must we feign for ownership for something to matter?

A tale of two movies:

Similar deal structures. Similar budgets.

One made $45M from 3300 screens, post pandemic, and won the weekend.

The other made $41M from 3600 screens pre-pandemic, and placed second.

And yet this is the coverage.

This is why you really can't tell the generation of NYers NOTHING. They went to middle school w legends, they were at the parties where new bands dropped future classics, they popped up at video shoots full of ICONS. They knew everyone casually. They lived.
Imagine being in high school in NYC in 1990 and traveling to Union Sq to see some other kids from Queens perform some songs you REALLY like. You're super hype. And surprise! Now you're exponentially more excited than before bc you've noticed the video camera capturing it all.
