✍️ New article: “Foreign aid from the United States saved millions of lives each year”

For decades, these aid programs received bipartisan support and made a difference. Cutting them will cost lives.

Richer countries don’t just avoid infectious disease — they also have lower rates of chronic disease deaths.

Kleinkindern wichtig.
Für Säuglinge und Kleinkinder sind viele Impfungen im frühen Alter empfohlen; die ersten bereits einige Wochen nach der Geburt. Das ist sinnvoll, denn das empfohlene Impfalter orientiert sich an der Risikosituation des zu schützenden Kindes. Bestimmte Infektionen können bei Säuglingen und Kleinkindern zu einem deutlich schwereren Krankheitsverlauf führen als bei älteren Kindern, zum Beispiel weil die Atemwege bei Säuglingen noch sehr eng sind oder weil ihr sich noch entwickelndes Immunsystem bestimmte Infektionen nicht wirksam
abwehren kann. Impfungen zum empfohlenen Impfzeitpunkt schützen
Säuglinge und Kleinkinder vor Infektionen und möglichen schweren Folgen.
Viele Eltern sind besonders vorsichtig, wenn es um Medikamente und Impfungen für ihre Kinder geht. Das ist verständlich. Der Körper von Kleinkindern und insbesondere von Säuglingen fängt gerade erst an sich zu entwickeln. Manche Eltern haben deshalb Bedenken, ihre Kinder schon frühzeitig impfen zu lassen.
Doch gerade weil Kleinkinder und Säuglinge besonders Schutzbedürftig sind, sind die frühzeitigen Impfungen sehr wichtig. Beispielsweise schützt die Pneumokokken-Impfung, die ab einem Alter von 2 Monaten empfohlen wird, zuverlässig vor der invasiven Pneumokokken-Erkrankung. Das ist eine besonders schwerwiegende Folge der Infektion, die u.a. Hirnhautentzündungen verursachen kann. Insbesondere Kinder in den ersten 2 Lebensjahren haben ein erhöhtes Risiko für die invasive Pneumokokken-Erkrankung. Fakt ist: Impfungen für Säuglinge und Kleinkinder sind wichtig für ihre Gesundheit.
Die Impfungen im Säuglings- und Kleinkindalter schützen die Kinder in einem Alter, in dem sie besonders gefährdet sind. Für diesen Schutz ist es notwendig, die empfohlenen Impfungen möglichst frühzeitig durchzuführen.

Thanks Paul. It’s nice to have a paper that’s both elegant (if I may say so) and practically useful. The conclusion is that using a particular covariate balancing PS estimator — inverse probability tilting — renders IPW, AIPW, and IPWRA all numerically identical with a linear conditional mean.
