I’m embarrassed for these people. I was at a writing retreat this summer that suggested we use genai for ideation. They told academics to use a plagiarism machine for ideas. If you are doing this, do us all a favor and leave the field. If you have no more ideas, you shouldn’t be an academic.
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

As much as Netflix pretends to be an entertainment company and a studio they move through the world like a tech company, up to and including devaluing the product they initially sold as a premium service (tv and movies).

Honestly I might have given the OU essay like a 50% just because I think the kid actually wrote that (offensive, idiotic, not the assignment at all) screed herself and shared her own actual thoughts. My bar is so low these days 😭

It’s blowing my mind that schools, universities, public services would run headlong into this. We spent 15 years documenting black boxes. This is a black box in a black hole!
I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

I think the shortest version of why LLMs are an anti education technology is that education is fundamentally about making shared context to understand ourselves, each other, and the world

And by design LLMs destroy shared context

The actual earnings call quotes say so little about how this actually would work or what it looks like but as an IP protection measure this seems like shooting yourself in the foot and putting D+ into the content moderation business like that sounds terribly ill -conceived
Bob Iger says Disney+ will soon have AI-generated short form content from users

Ok so they’ve just drank the kool-aid around AI and only see a university education as a job training program. This actually makes a lot of sense

The extent to which these companies assume by default that they are unimpeachable and can do this stuff without any fear of meaningful consequences is reaching truly impressive heights.

Here is a Meta product lead just casually creating a sex bot out of the likeness of the most famous singer alive
Many of the bots were requested by users, but a Meta gen AI product lead herself ordered up and shared chatbots impersonating Taylor Swift. Meta has deleted many of the bots and acknowledged that the intimate images Meta's systems produced violated the company's own policies.

like I get that it is reasonable to be initially skeptical that someone is actually evil and insane enough to want to bring back a huge number of wholly preventable infectious diseases in order to cleanse the population of the genetically weak but he’s actually doing it now so it’s time to wake up

The single most important thing to understand about digital futurism is this:

When the digital future that Sam Altman ( or Elon, or Andreessen, etc) predicts fails to materialize, he doesn’t have to give the money back.

One of the reasons the AI bubble has taken Silicon Valley by storm is that it feeds into this myth that all an engineer bro needs to solve a problem is some surface-level knowledge of it.

These people can ask ChatGPT to give them an error-ridden primer and claim to have done their due diligence 🧵

LLMs are purely statistical engines that operate on purely formal objects (character strings). We can “train” an LLM to distinguish true from false or fact from opinion or warranted from baseless just as soon as we can figure out how to reduce semantics and epistemology to syntax (which is never)

I despise these AI bros for so many reasons — but among the top for me is that, bc of their egos + recklessness, and bc of a gullible grifter culture that expands their uptake + influence, we’re all now obligated to care abt their bullshit + minimize its harms. I’d rather be doing anything else.
