The Louisiana legislature is a disgrace. Supreme Court is also.
propublica.org
1,000+ people currently imprisoned in Louisiana were convicted by split juries — ruled unconstitutional in 2020.

Yet the state Supreme Court has declined to grant new trials, and lawmakers have repeatedly denied a reexamination of their cases.

An Unconstitutional “Jim Crow Jury” Sent Him to Prison for Life. A New Law Aims to Keep Him There.
Five years ago, the Supreme Court decided that nonunanimous jury verdicts are unconstitutional. But for this Louisiana prisoner — and hundreds of others — “tough on crime” state leaders have ensured t...

Billionaire grifters are about to dismantle your government. So instead of your tax dollars going to your Medicare or your Medicaid or your affordable care act or to veterans benefits or your social security - it will go to THEM in the form of tax cuts for the wealthy.

I agree with Josh but with one caveat: Words can demoralize people. I have political science-y disagreements with people who say "America is now fascist," but more to the point, I don't want people to internalize the idea that it's all done and dusted. Trump is far weaker than may people realize.

Fighting with each other whether the Trump administration is/is not fascist/totalitarian seems kind of pointless. Labels aside, it is not a fully consolidated dictatorshp, whatever we want to call it and we need to work together to get them out.

We learned the lyrics to the first verse of "O Canada" in 2016, and we are putting it to good use now :)

My husband is watching the Blue Jays/Yankees game in the other room. He is a card-carrying Yankee Hater (he even has a book about how to hate the Yankees correctly). They are currently being demolished, and he is so happy.

Also, I used to stress out so much about stuff like the thee/thou = formal dogma and now I'm just like, "whatever. People are allowed to be wrong, bless their heart." But yeah, it's different with writing, where I insist on at LEAST accuracy, or barring that, extreme beauty.
annporterla.bsky.social
This is so funny to me because in the same context you grew up in, "Thee" and "Thou" are per dogma terms of respect and formal - i.e., exactly the opposite of what they actually are. If you are reading stuff that is mixed right and wrong no wonder your head is spinning.

Liberals say that recent Supreme Court ruling have given the executive branch too much power. But they’re wrong, because the rulings only apply to Trump and will all be reversed when there’s a Democratic president.

idk man, if you’re getting to the point where you’re accusing prosecutors, judges, and metro police of being the enemy, i am skeptical you have achieved the kind of consolidation you need for this kind of a project

The interesting thing about this piece is that just two days from publication it's predictions are mostly or all belied by what has already happened. www.politico.com/news/magazin...

I think we should do Trump-is-dead speculation every time we get a clean chance, it’s clearly great for team morale.

If you’re not into it, I dunno, post cat pics or something and enjoy the downstream benefits of other people being in a good mood

She quoted me! Paraphrased, but this is my protest sign:
A protest sign with the text "Armed Secret Police are Kidnapping us off the streets and putting us in Concentration camps." There are photographs of masked ICE employees, another of ICE and other law enforcement (also masked) grabbing a Hispanic-looking man in a green shirt and pinning his arms behind his back, and another photo of people looking at a caged section of a detention facility.

I'm in the paper today discussing why deploying the national guard to New Orleans is an unnecessary step that will hurt local businesses. I don't mention in the piece, but it will also be expensive and polling shows it's already very unpopular.
