the reason people sometimes act madder at democrats than republicans when republicans do impossibly evil shit is the same reason why, if you hired an exterminator to handle a roach infestation and he showed up to feed and play with them instead, your first instinct wouldn’t be to yell at the roaches

I feel like I should clarify that I poorly paraphrased that study. It focused on empathy and found that being transported into a fictional narrative increases empathy. So my brain knows those things didn’t happen to me, but it do be gettin rocked by a good story pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...
How Does Fiction Reading Influence Empathy? An Experimental Investigation on the Role of Emotional Transportation

All famines are man-made, all famines are political. Historians of empire and humanitarianism have known this forever. Gaza is not starving, Gaza is being starved, by Israel, and this starvation is enabled by our government and by every other government that does not step in to force food and aid.

a lot of this comes from a sometimes wilful distortion of historic fact: many Hunter-gathers would have had a notably higher standard of living than many ancient agrarian peoples.

transmuting this to "a steppe-nomad in the year dot ate better than an American with access to trader joes" is silly
This is one of those things that endlessly bothers me about the people who romanticize pre-State and pre-industrial societies so much. We have a lot of anthropology and ethnography on this! People fucking killed each other a lot! They still did war!

There was politics and competition for resources!
As Azar Gat shows, organized intra-species predation ("war") shows up in every hunter-gatherer or horticultural civilization we have data for. In fact, the rates of violence are often much, much higher than in agricultural societies or states.
