love how the league and board of governors are acting like they had no idea rodman’s contract ended this offseason, all this really could’ve been resolved months ago yet now they’re scrambling to find some random half-assed solution instead of using the time to figure out how to raise the cap
NEWS: The #NWSL board is voting on a proposal that would allow teams to pay top players beyond the current salary cap but with limits, w/the hope that it's a solution for Trinity Rodman and other stars. Proposal still needs to pass. Details (so far) on @espn.com 👇

I don't understand how any of this is easier than just raising the damn cap, which the commissioner gets to do at her discretion. If teams don't want to spend to the cap, current, or future, maybe they need to reevaluate being a team in this league.

Look a was offside but look at that recovery run and tackle from Acheampong and then remember that Maresca was playing Tosin ahead of him. Criminal.

We did not have a great window. We did not address the right things. But hey, we were splashy late or whatever.

We definitely needed to bolster ourselves defensively this window if this is what Sonia wanted to run. But we spent the most on a winger. I love said winger, but it wasn't a need signing, and it confused me. We also have a lot of money tied up in slower players, and whew boy.

Reality: we're in a fight for 5th to secure Champions League football.

Liverpool endured one of the worst runs in their club's history and are currently level on points with us.

To put this in perspective: NWSL ownership is freaking out about paying its by far most recognizable and most valuable player somewhere between like $1.25-1.5m, an amount less than 1% of a new franchise fee

berman saying this is a business not a charity is killing me like if you refuse to pay players their fair market value & keep artificially lowering wages the nwsl is literally going to become a charity for the owners themselves, making bank off of players being paid relative pennies

If only there were means available to the manager to change the players at some point during the game. Someone should look into that.
Maresca: “One of the regrets I have after Leeds is that I didn't play with Josh Acheampong”.

Performative. 🥱 If Tosin played the exact same way and we somehow walked away with a draw, Maresca would be saying the opposite.

Enzo Maresca on experience: "Who was the most experienced player for us in the week? Tosin. Did he play good? So it is not about experience."

When people talk about adding experienced players to the team, they mean international level players who have played at the highest level and won. Not this:

at this point, no matter the resolution, berman & nwsl owners have tarnished the league. we all knew this inflection point was coming and they still failed in the worst, most public way. i would pay to read the group chats of players everywhere discussing a league fighting a star’s $1m/yr contract.
"We expect the contract... and the free agency to be respected."

NWSLPA Executive Director Meghann Burke explains why the multimillion-dollar deal offered to Trinity Rodman by the Washington Spirit should stand.

this is literally how big contracts work in every major american league!! every!!! single!!!!!! one!!!!!!!!!!
“According to sources, the Spirit had proposed a four-year scaling contract that would see the 23-year-old free agent paid more in the final two years of the deal, with the hope of an increased media rights deal for the NWSL following upcoming negotiations helping with those costs.”
NEW: The Spirit came up with a multi-million dollar offer to keep Trinity Rodman in the league, which she was ready to accept. It was vetoed by NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman, according to sources.

Where's it leave negotiations? Great question. www.nytimes.com/athletic/686...

I am not a Spirit fan, but a rising tide lifts all boats and Kang and her team want to go all in. Just because Chicago, Louisville and others want to be cheap should not be holding back franchises that give a damn about the future of the NWSL
