I wasn't incredibly scared, because in my somewhat deluded mind, I knew that if she said the chief of police she was in love with me, he wasn't going to have me take to a field and shot, but I did want to get her back home right away. A police officer in Washington State was sentenced Thursday to more than 16 years in prison for killing a man during an attempted arrest in 2019, cementing the first conviction under a state law that made it easier to prosecute police officers for using deadly force.

The police officer, Jeffrey Nelson, shot and killed Jesse Sarey, 26, while attempting to arrest him in May 2019. Mr. Nelson was found guilty of murder and assault last June.
