More trade news tonight: Trump says he’ll raise tariffs on Canadian imports to 35%, effective Aug. 1.

Tariffs on Canada are currently set at 25% (over fentanyl), with exemptions for USMCA-compliant trade, and 10% (for energy). The letter suggests the 35% rate would supersede all of that.

I grew up in the Sydney municipality when Nick Adams was deputy mayor. During the Bird Flu crisis, his solution was to ban all pigeons in Ashfield and shoot birds. This is the sort of big-brain energy he brings to the table.

For now, Vietnam’s major economic role globally is as an assembly line between Chinese producers and Western markets. The country's new trade deal with the Trump administration is unlikely to change that.

Three weeks ago Trump gave Canada a month to negotiate a deal with a July 21 deadline.

They started talking.

13 days ago he called off talks unless they got rid of their digital services tax.

They quickly complied.

Talks resumed 10 days ago.

Now this.

Philippines—20%
Brunei—25%
Moldova—25%
Algeria—30%
Iraq—30%
Libya—30%

And it remains weird. They're basically retreading the Liberation Day tariffs, but adding or subtracting a percentage point or two in a seemingly random way.

Malaysia was initially slapped with 24% tariffs on 2 April as part of the 'Liberation Day' tariffs. Malaysia decided to forgo retaliating and sought instead to negotiate with Washington.

Today, Trump has announced 25% tariffs on Malaysia. Meaning all those negotiations were completely pointless!
And on that front, Trump has just imposed tariffs on:

🇿🇦 South Africa
🇰🇿 Kazakhstan
🇱🇦 Laos
