(1/9) I often see the effects of hormone replacement therapy summarized as a snappy little list of distinct effects- eg, estrogen HRT gives you “breast growth, some fat redistribution, etc”. This is an easy way to talk about it, but it often understates the actual effects.

I can't remember if I read in Stone or Serano the framing that doctors wrote books about how to distinguish the few worthy trans people from the unworthy crowd and then had a profession-wide meltdown when they discovered that trans people can read books
Sandy Stone's 'Empire Strikes Back: A Posttranssexual Manifesto' talks about this, and the sheer resentment, bitterness, and petty vitriol sexologists and medical professionals direct at trans women for "gaming" their shitty, worthless, fucked-up system.

It's been going on forever.
Yes but, and this might sound insane to cis people but it literally just is, they will still say that

If being the sole, largely unsupported provider of childcare and domestic labor is so glamorous and empowering and fulfilling, why aren't men signing up for it in droves?
Being a stay-at-home mom is something that is encouraged or compelled by many misogynist cultural norms and material conditions. But it is not a *feminist* desire or a *feminist* choice. Feminism wants women in the public world.

People actually should be forced to reckon with the fact that their “individual choices” that just so happened to be “right” for them & their family might have broader societal implications that serve to further the oppression of women.
This has been empirically demonstrated many times! You can’t expect men to have a place of domination and superiority over women in the home and treat women as equals outside of it.
Also, men who have traditional, stay-at-home wives treat women in their workplaces extremely unfairly, meaning that the choice to stay home *actively hurts* the choices of women (mothers or no) who want to work... while women who work do not hurt stay at home moms at all!

My point is that

> if you consider sex the biological traits associated with masculinity or femininity since there is a certain overlap between trans women and women's brains

is a bit too essentialist too, because there need not be such overlap and we shouldn't ground the right to transition on it

If you aspire to ANYTHING beyond the mud, you must be utterly ruthless to troglodytes asserting that "people shouldn't be allowed to change their sex." There's no ignoring or compromising with such an attack on science and choice.

The only path to the stars is through the ribcages of transphobes.

Just finished this series and I quite liked it! It's a good introduction to the Rationalists and their weirdness, but I really wish they'd had a trans woman on to co-host given how important transness is to understanding Ziz and her friends/followers
New Behind the Bastards ⚡📚⚡

Robert sits down with David Gborie to trace the Zizian’s development, from part of the Bay Area Rationalist subculture to killers.

It's also about threats of state violence against everyone from hosting providers to electronics manufacturers to deform and cripple an entire technology stack to accommodate crap like DRM and undermine end-user ownership and control of their equipment
Intellectual property enforcement is not about anyone "asking" you to do anything!

It's about using state violence & threats thereof to physically intimidate (and, if necessary, cage) those who share or reproduce information in a manner the IP "owner" hasn't authorized.
it's not a horrifically immoral leveraging of the violence of the state to ask you to pay the people who make a video game if you want to play a video game, imo bsky.app/profile/rech...

I think a lot of the efficiency issues will be addressed in time.

Provenance of training data might get fixed at some point, I doubt any time soon though.

I think treating statistical tools the same as deterministic tools is always a mistake.

We have pilots, or developers, in the loop on purpose. They are capable of real reasoning, and in most cases, they have been trained in the area they are operating in.

They have limited context. It's better to know when you can't rely on your tool, than to think it is good when it isn't.

I think one of the reasons that I like Rust, and why I've been so reluctant to really use LLMs at all comes from a core tenet in building safety critical systems:

When it really matters, it is better for a tool to say "I don't know", give up, and to make it clear it is doing so, than to guess wrong

anyway tech worker radicalization against the rightward turn of the owner/investor class would be amazing. may this be the beginning of a flood that washes away those reactionary fucks

this is undeniably true, accurately modelling the world is as much if not more a matter of emotional intelligence than it is whatever iq tests purport to measure
my take, from having spent a long time in and around academia, is that being genuinely rational is as much a matter of character as "raw intelligence"--as much a matter of *emotional self-regulation* in the face of the challenges to one's ego that inevitably emerge in investigation and debate
