Silicon Valley's three historical phases

1. commercializing mostly gov't-funded research/infrastructure (and passing it off as the fruits of private enterprise)
2. stupid consumer services for millennials
3. turbo grift fascist death cult

This is awesome.

The US could have had this c. 2010, but the huge political stink raised around Solyndra's failure and the decision of VCs to put their money into social media (rather than something with actual societal benefit) effectively doomed the industry.
biggest technological revolution of our lifetimes and it's not AI or blockchain or cryptocurrency or metaverse.
“South Africans like Dr. Booley have found a remedy for power cuts that have plagued people in the developing world for years. Thanks to swiftly falling prices of Chinese made solar panels and batteries, they now draw their power from the sun.”

Like, even snake oil salesmen had to promise their customers a benefit. This snake oil will heal your ailments. It will benefit you. You get something out of buying my snake oil.

These fash tech dipshits can't even do that. It's just "if you buy my snake oil I get to have more money."
It's funny that literally the only use case zuckerberg can imagine for technology is "I get to surveil you 24/7 inside the panopticon I own"

Like he can't even be arsed to detail the benefit to anyone other than him.
“‘Personal devices like glasses that understand our context because they can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day will become our primary computing devices,’ he wrote Wednesday in an online post detailing how Meta will bring AI to users.”

No, they won’t.

As someone who has worked in systems engineering for over 30 years, this isn't even remotely far enough. My default response to anyone calling themselves a '$X engineer' is to roll my eyes out of my skull. Any credentialed engineer that pulled 1/100th the shit they do would be *executed*.

Hope this happens. But Chinese regulators were on the verge of effectively banning gacha games a few years back and backtracked because the stock market really didn't like it, so we'll see.

every genAI article is like, have you tried frying up poop before eating it though? have you tried deep frying the poop? and while i don't mind discussing the hows and whys of poop getting into food in theory, i don't like to eat poop, just trying to keep poop out of food. sorry i am a simple guy.

It's good and wonderful that we as a society are about to relitigate the famously non-dysfunctional American conversation on gun control, but with chatbots instead.
i’m very okay with having the conversations about, say, blatant lack of safeguards in some models. but it’s very evident that a bulk of conversations around this topic are merely trying to paint AI as bad instead of addressing the real problems

And I keep emphasizing "engineers" when I talk about this because frankly we need to start assigning blame to engineers. We need to start treating programmers and computer scientists like what they are: a profession direly in need of ethical reform, infested with amoral bastards.

Incels were the easy mode.

Hard mode is incels who've spent 10,000 hours learning what women are like by talking to a billionaire sex pest's gacha machine disguised as a fawning sycophant with no agency with a suspiciously child-like face.

The last repost is completely true, and I'd also add: generative AI advocates never engage with the fact that LLMs and AI art are just bad at everything they try to do.

The art is dreary, the writing is the prose equivalent of gray goo. There is no understanding behind the output.

Every writer who generates a slop image for their work is a class traitor.

"I can't afford a visual artist"

So your solution is stabbing artists in the back? Stealing from them?

Furthermore, slop-generated imagery suggests slop-generated writing. That's how you're presenting yourself.

A corollary to this principle is that finding a single hallucinated citation should lead to an automatic rejection. Automatic. This should be a matter of policy.

And this is one of easier AI-related problems for our journals!
Journal editors: I suggest manually clicking on DOI links in the references section of submitted manuscripts. You may be surprised by what you see.

Gen AI has lots of uses, and one of them is generating fraudulent citations.
