We really need to stop pretending like GenAI is some fundamental distinct technology. It's not. It's just an application of machine learning.
What makes it bad is that it:
- Uses training data without consent, and
- Its goal is to generate new/novel content that replaces the training data

The only difference is whether the voice model signed up for / consented for this to be done explicitly. It literally just boils down to consent.

This is quite complex to explain to a complete layperson but the two things are so completely different, and obviously so to people who understand them, that it takes some mental realigning to even think of how to approach explaining this, but I'll try (it'll take a thread, sorry).
one thing I find irritating about the AI hype/discourse cycle... among others... what is AI? Is caves of qud "AI" generated? Do we *really* morally distinguish b/w wave function collapse and deep learning/transformers as algos? maybe that CoQ is ethically trained and run locally the difference?

I think some people make themselves miserable trying to sell their work to people who are not into that kind of work. If you run a burger joint, you're going to have a hard time getting people in who just want to eat sushi, no matter how amazing your burgers are.
