Mathematician.
NYT Spelling Bee has a disappointingly limited vocabulary. However, I was astounded when it didn't accept "felicitate", which apparently is "mainly Indian English".

1 marathon = 20 miles + 10 kms. Okay, okay, that's approximate (misses about 8 meters). But still more satisfying than the decidedly non-round numbers in any pure units.

I like to convert between different units when running. 3km is approximately 10 light microseconds, which to me seems a more impressive distance.

Another great story featuring leeches. I genuinely don't understand people's reactions to leeches and leech stories. They don't cause infections or pain. Is it just the sight of blood?
Second fun leech story of the week: During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con several years ago, I casually mentioned going wading in the local leech pond to collect leeches for my axolotl.

This graph is astonishing. The people that bang on about “natural birth” and “women have been doing this forever without help” need to be forced to stare at this until their eyes water.

I love this story!
I knew a biologist--still do technically, she's not dead--who went on a field expedition and came home with a NASTY code. No symptoms but absolutely DEVASTATING congestion. She was talking like a plugged-up cartoon character for months. Nothing helped.

Oversized cars endanger pedestrians in several ways:
♦️ They convey more force in a crash and take more time to halt
♦️ Their height creates blind zones that hide those on foot (esp children)
♦️ Their tall front ends strike heads/torsos, rather than legs

Super important thread about mega sized cars and pedestrian safety. If you’re concerned, we’re in the 60-day comment period where you can ask the government to regulate car safety for those OUTSIDE cars as well as inside. See the end of this thread!
First, context.

America is mired in a pedestrian safety crisis. Deaths among those walking (and cycling, too) recently hit 40-year highs. No other rich country is experiencing anything like the chart below.

I came across a published math paper from 2017 (by engineers, not by mathematicians) which is horribly wrong. It's not just that the proof is sloppy, the claim itself is nowhere near right, as the simplest of examples shows. The journal is highly reputed (not a math journal). Way to report this?

Some lizards seem to go out of their way to be ugly. Even within a species they seem to be competing with each other. Do birds/predators get grossed out?

Related to Trump's performance: Its a lot worse for someone to talk in rambling word salad that goes nowhere than it is to struggle for a few seconds and then make a cogent statement, but people treat the latter as much worse than the former because it doesn't look as confident

Tried to find out the name of the cooling gadget that the marathoners were wearing in Paris yesterday. Now I see ads and product reviews for "wet towels" everywhere. Starting to feel a bit of empathy for Arthur Dent.

@bsky.app I wish there was an easy way to find the original post with a link to an article. I will click on a link to a potentially interesting article/site, but will decide to like or share only after I have read the entire article. A feature with the article backlinked to the post would be great!
