Hi, I'm The Barefoot Backpacker; I travel the world in the belief that 'everywhere is interesting', & record my thoughts on a podcast, blog, newsletter, & occasionally youtube.

I'm also a hiker, runner, and beer snob. And definitely 'Queer'.

Find me via the link :)

Someone is sat on a rock (or large boulder) in a flat landscape covered in large boulders and moss. The sky is light grey and cloudy. The person is wearing a blue hat, beige t-shirt, blue denim capri-length jeans, and is barefoot. On their back is a large backpack with a water bottle in the side pocket. They are side-on to the camera, looking out in the distance to the left.

In today's episode of This is Totally a Normal Town:
I have been outside stringing fairy lights on my balcony, ready for several months of darkness. Next door has also been out, hanging out ptarmigan carcasses to dry on hers.

Ha, that wasn't the only pauses
barefoot-backpacker.com
I had a bit more flexibility in my pod and still at least half of it ended up on the cutting room floor.

That said, the pauses between sentences seemed quite long when I was listening to the original audio. When I did a 'truncate silence' it, it shortened the length by about 6-7 minutes!

For almost 25 years, AVEN has been working to help ace and aro people across the globe understand themselves and promote open, honest public understanding of our experience. In that time we've had a tremendous impact, and we're asking for your support to fund the next two years of our work.

The original chat covered three Zoom calls, and her experience of editing it down to less than one is why i podcast and don't vlog.

Anyway, go have a watch and ponder if my daisy top was 'too loud for radio'.

That @barefoot-backpacker.com has visited 100 countries, and asked me to ask them some questions about it for their podcast. I'm not sure these are entirely what they had in mind

I’m so sick of people excusing violence against Jews, especially on Yom Kippur, because of anger toward Israel.

Would it be ok if people attacked people praying at a Russian Orthodox Church because they are angry at Russia and Putin?

No? Exactly.

I saw this ad on a website this morning. I’ve resisted clicking on it but I can’t work out how this “portable stairlift” would work, unless the objective was to wobble a lot followed by injury or death.
#shitads
Photo (obviously AI generated). It shows a purple contraption on a wooden staircase with someone standing on it. The purple thing is a shallow v shape with the middle of the v testing on a step and the top of the left hand side of the v on the step above. The right hand side of the v is level and sticking out from the middle.

Some of us need supervision with matches anyway. Definitely a two person job.

It is the birthday of the novelist who wrote,
“Each of us is born with a box of matches inside us but we can't strike them all by ourselves.”
Mexican writer Laura Esquivel was born on this day in 1950. She is best known for her novel "Like Water for Chocolate."

That church in the middle of Edinburgh, whatsisname, er ...
#SundayPixWorship
In the centre of a very dark image is the tower of a church, brightly lit with floodlights through a mist. The lower part of the church is not lit, barely visible.

I fully expected the second part of that statement to be '...and Labour feels that the policy doesn't go far enough. We will implement it faster and better and more cruelly than they could!' like they did every time the Tory government announced some illiberal bullshit policy.

I don't hate poetry.
I just hate bad poetry.
But since 99% of all poetry is utterly dreadful, I end up thinking I hate poetry.
**Dons flame retardant suit.
Seriously though, most of it is ... dire!!

As a migrant, every company I have worked for has vastly benefitted from my expertise.

A company I worked for was pan-European: my knowledge of the continent meant that I was able to work with colleagues all over Europe effectively.

Kicking out migrants means lowering the country's productivity.

Contrast this with Iron Maiden, who'll give you a history lecture about one of the greatest military leaders who ever lived, and a lesson about a Coleridge poem from 1798.

Please if you can help. My friends family survived the escape from gaza city, but are now sitting in the open in the south.

In order for each family to provide a tent and a bathroom, they need at least 1500 US dollars.

Let me know if you have anything spare to give.

I think all dentists tell you that. Maybe they all have shares in a dental floss company?
barefoot-backpacker.com
Today my dentist told me i should be flossing more.

Well no, she actually said *Brits* should be flossing more. In my specific case, the 'more' was entirely superfluous.

As an aside, getting a 'hygiene' teeth cheaning is a marginally uncomfortable activity.

A very long time ago during a fever dream this "joke"🙃 wrote itself
Woman in pharmacy "Can I have some aspirin? "
Pharmacist "Do you want real aspirin or chalk placebos, they are cheaper"
Woman "I'll take the chalk. They're for my aunt and she needs them more than I do"...

It was some fever I had..

Today is #HobbitDay because both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were born on September 22nd. Normally we'd shire a hobbit pun or two but it might just feel like a tolkien gesture and we don't want to embarrass our elves. Anyway come and boromir #Tolkien books.
