Also, he hasn't won the World Series in 16 years. So maybe he does need a huge payroll to win? Whatever he and Brian have been doing hasn't worked lately.
Look, every time Hal says “you don’t need a $300M payroll to win the WS” and yea, he’s technically correct, but when you have nearly a third of your payroll doing nothing for you and you aren’t willing to hold the people responsible for that accountable, your only option is to spend baby spend.

Until owners open their books, the default assumption should be that they're making money hand over fist and they don't want the players to know it. And opening the books should mean cash flow statements for all affiliated entities, not just showing paper losses for the team.

Reminder to baseball fans: it's not your money. You gain nothing by your team cutting salary every year and attempting to get the sixth wild card by the slimmest margin possible. You don't have to defend these people, who are pocketing $$$ in real estate deals while using the other hand to cry poor.

the reality is that wherever you draw the line, the owners will find a way to hide revenue just on the other side. we know this because they've done it repeatedly. the one time they opened their books was a disaster for them.

Seems like the solution would be to just display whatever system the league is using so they're the same. (Or just use the technology to get every call right in the first instance and skip the challenge system entirely.)

They gotta fire Boone. It won't fix anything, but you have to at least pretend you care. Every day he stays on is a day the Yankees tell us they're perfectly fine with this embarrassment of a team.
