In Norse mythology, the woodpecker is primarily associated with the god Thor, god of thunder and lightning. The connection stems from the bird's characteristic hammering, which is thought to mimic the sound of thunder or the striking of Thor's magic hammer.

9. That time my nieces rescued a boxy stag beetle, & while it recovered they gave it a name.

Athena was a good beet. Technically, the species common name is lesser stag beetle. Rude. So we gave it another name.

(Yes. I know lesser meant smaller, don't @ me, cos IDC.)

It's a sunny day in London, so for day 11 of #ArtAdventCalendar we need a dashing bird to go with it

Day 11 #artAdventCalendar The loggerhead shrike, endemic to North America, is also known as the butcherbird for its carnivorous tendencies and habit of ostentatiously displaying stored prey dramatically impaled on convenient spikes like tree thorns or barbed wire. 🧪🐡🪶 Its usual prey are insects, 🧵
As described, my linocut print on 11”x 14” paper with a deckle edge shows a loggerhead shrike perched on a dark burgundy thorny honey locust branch on which a 4-winged small pollination drone is impaled. The signed print is titled “Loggerhead Shrike Will Impale but not eat drones”

Happy birthday to Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), who published the first computer program. 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🧮 #histsci She worked together with Charles Babbage, the inventor of the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine (the first computers), correcting his notes on how to 🧵
As described, my linocut print shows Lady Ada, based on engravings made during her lifetime, printed in purple, before gears of the Charles Babbage Analytical Engine, based on one of his blueprints, printed in bronze. Depicted around the gears are equations relating how to calculate Bernoulli Numbers.
