It's book launch week! Spend the weekend catching up with my bargain basement cyborg hivemind. Murder, mystery, and a detective who just wants to be left alone with her poetry and bad romance novels.

It's (official) book release day! Come pick up INSIDE THREAT, the sixth Rachel Peng book! This book might be haunted, but in a way of my own making which doesn't transfer at ownership.

“How to Talk Minnesotan” is intended to be comedic but I recommend it for every autistic transplant, because no one will explain any of this to you, they’ll just get mad at you and you won’t know why. This outright just tells you the unspoken rules and everything makes so much more sense after that
This is light-hearted and doesn't touch on cases of fuckaroundits, but maybe it'll spark joy. Mid 90s local PBS.

Every time someone says "I can't write X, editors will never buy it" an angel loses its wings

Those shining adamantine feathers, sharper than death, slice all creatures in their path to molecule-thin ribbons, blood raining down onto acres of land rendered poisonous for decades.

So maybe reconsider

@bookslikewhoa.bsky.social Really enjoy your channel and side channel. Because we had a lot of old school overlap I tried Ilona Andrews at your suggestion and what a treat. Just wanted to reach out and say thanks, we’re watching.

What an interesting reading year! I mostly read via audiobooks and am so thankful for Libby. Running errands, providing care for parents, walking to and from car…all have been made better by audiobooks. I swear doing unpleasant, repetitive things would’ve driven me mad this year without them.

Look at that graph! Wild!
5/ So let's talk about that minority of heavy readers. We know how many books Americans said they read in 2025 — which lets us calculate a distribution. And it turns out we've got some substantial Reading Inequality. (Three cheers for the Power Law!)

Uh-oh someone taught the menswear guy about kerning.
crazy how much this bugs me now that someone pointed it out. if i worked at the white house, i would find this ugly, but not as annoying as i do now. ignorance is really bliss bc they more you learn, the more you just walk around thinking "collar gap" and "kerning is off."

So. Audible did make the announcement of their updated model and the top line they announced was Royalty Rates are increased! Hurrah! But taking a closer look at the article something is (intentionally, I'd bet) obfuscated.

If you have an Audible subscription, and don't want to abuse authors, **don't use Plus or premium plus.**

Those are like streaming services, where you don't 'own' the audiobooks. They massively cut the authors' royalties.

Better yet, move to Libro.fm or use your --

Morning fun. The fountain in the pool we've set up to entertain the local wildlife died. Replaced it yesterday and it's attracting more attention than the old one. This is a Cooper's Hawk.

The way to develop a presence that can sell books on bluesky is to not be on bluesky to sell books.

That sounds trite but if you just want to sell books, don't be on here. But if you love being on here just for fun, you can also sell stuff.
I have found that text-based social like Old Twitter and On Here moves books primarily when it comes to flash ebook sales. That drives a lot of cheap impulse buys. It also builds gradual brand awareness over years. But this is 100s of copies at best, not 1000s.
I think bsky definitely contributes to sales, and I've certainly seen it drive people to my books. I think the trap is, with social media, thinking it's The Way To Sell Books, when it definitely isn't. Social media moves some copies, just not at the level a publisher would desire, I think.

Yeah, there is a quirky dynamic where books by women are presumed to be for women and books by men are presumed to be for everyone, and honestly while there was very little interest in courting women as a customer demographic, there seems to be some rage at losing them as a built in audience.
I think there may be an argument to be made that it is harder to sell books to ONLY men, because younger men read less and women no longer accept that the male POV is the default way of viewing the world. But as the kids say, this is a skill issue, for the writing and the marketing.

It blows my mind how much credit people give Substack. "Join my Substack" "I wrote a Substack" "I have a Substack"

After what Facebook, Twitter and Google have pulled, it's unbelievable how many writers are falling for this again
Wrote a thing. Come for the inside baseball of what it was like to turn Substack down in 2017, stay for a piano-based metaphor on how VC funding gradually dilutes mission.
Writers are doing themselves a massive disservice by branding their personal newsletters as a "Substack," writes @ernie.tedium.co
