you can def network vertically, but prioritize networking horizontally

surround yourself with kind, hardworking, and talented friends, and it’s only a matter of time before your careers go places

also: if you can’t take an opportunity, pass it on to a friend who’d do just as well if not better
Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.

Possibly a controversial opinion, but I genuinely think daycare and mental health services should be free for all children in the U.S., regardless of income. Your kid's health and happiness shouldn't be dependent on your job.

Really makes me question what my Mass Effect coverage is going to look like moving forward...
As of 2:03pm PT, EA's shareholders have officially approved EA's $55 billion sale to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The deal will next need to receive approval from government regulators

True: The federal government can garnish your wages for debts such as defaulted student loans.
False: The federal government can do so without notice and take more than 15% of your disposable income.

Even if you're the federal government, wage theft is still THEFT.
Donald Trump has just begun seizing the wages of Americans who don’t pay their student loans.

pillars of modern civilization being torn down daily by conservatives with strong opinions about topics they're entirely ignorant of, put no effort into understanding, expecting like babies to be treated as geniuses and throwing a tantrum when anyone tries to educate them applies to so much going on

It's very easy:

Just don't. The idea that Copilot or ChatGPT are suddenly essential tools is just buying into the corporate ad blitz.

Games were made just fine (well, relatively) up through...what, 2023? 2024? They didn't suddenly become VITAL for budgets or design docs in the last 2-3 years.

"Don't...TEMPT me, Techbro! I dare not take it. Not even to keep it safe. Understand, Techbro: I would use this 'tool' from a desire to write stories. But through me...it would wield ideas and emotions too unhinged to imagine!"
Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what genAI is.

GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, b/c you don't have evil in your heart.

But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, & anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.

they didn't need AI to make Silksong, it just needed some deeply insane guys to have a blank check for living expenses until their next thing was done, I think we should try doing more of that instead

besides the obvious near-term concrete win here (congratulations Blue Prince, new winner of GOTY) I appreciate this also hopefully makes ultra clear to newer teams that even if their work was as well received as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, AI'll make it ineligible or get an asterisk in awards shows

I don’t think this is a conspiracy theory. Investors have all moved from games to AI. Games are still hugely profitable but they don’t promise “exponential growth” after the initial spike during Covid. AI is the new hotness, so execs need the rank and file to use it. That’s where the money is.
My conspiracy theory about genAI in games blowing up more and more by big companies is that they’ve all got a ton of investors insisting they use genAI tools otherwise they(investors) won’t be able to bankroll em anymore

Let me be clear: if using generative AI was really as okay as Larian, Sandfall, and now Owlcat claim, then they wouldn't keep trying to downplay it. They wouldn't have to clarify it's just for "concept art" or "early development". They would hold it up and proudly share it. But they know better.

I feel like believing anything GenAI says is the same as thinking an acid trip is giving you some kind of extra sensory perception. Both may be entertaining and draw from and feel like real experiences, but neither are valid as a source of truth.

this is one of those things conservatives misunderstand about privilege, because it requires a less self-centered view on life: the point isn't for those of us born with extra keys on our keyrings we inherited from even less fair times to feel bad and apologize, it's to hold open doors and copy keys
