I hope it’s not lost in the shock and awe that starting with a city like Chicago is an exercise in anti-Blackness. They get to terrify immigrants and undermine Black city leadership at the same damn time, associating sanctuary with illegitimate Black governance
The Wall Street Journal says there will be a splashy ICE operation in Chicago on Tuesday.

While the headline is lurid, the actual operation described in the piece (100-200 agents) seems not that unusual for ICE (google Operation Cross-check). Expect a PR blitz, though.

Trump to Begin Large-Scale Deportations Tuesday
The incoming Trump administration is planning a large-scale immigration raid in Chicago next week, the first move in President-Elect Donald Trump’s promised mass deportation campaign.

The thing about 'viewpoint diversity' is that taken to its logical extreme it means you must go out of your way to include liars and scoundrels because they too have viewpoints
I had a liberal centrist — a professional — once tell me that they engage with more diversity at a Bari Weiss dinner party than they do in any mainstream media event.

I mention this because, just as it is true in politics at the moment, some of the calls are coming from inside the house.

Stop trying to argue with the logic of the right. The right purposefully employs inconsistent logic to specifically in order to make people show it is above consistency. It is purely about dominance.

And it also has the added benefit of getting its foes obsessed with arguing instead of fighting.

We in the legal profession really need to have a moment of introspection about how our commitment to "civility" above all else didn't just enable everything we're seeing now, it helped *cause* it.

Some arguments should not be met with civility. Sometimes civility only serves oppression.

Lawyers for ICE are increasingly hiding their identities in court. This is completely unprecedented.

“We’re not really doing names publicly,” said Judge ShaSha Xu — after stating her own name and those of the immigrants and their lawyers.

I think Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissents are an important exception to the "Supreme Court dissents don't matter" rule of thumb, because she is using them not to argue with the conservative justices, but to explain to the public that the conservative justices are liars and in the tank for Trump
Ketanji Brown Jackson Is Telling the Truth About the Supreme Court
The task of interpreting the law is inherently “political.” But no justice has been this comfortable saying so in public.

I hope this story highlights for y’all how fragile the concept of citizenship is/how thin the line between citizen and noncitizen is—when we completely demonize and terrorize the latter, the former gets more precarious
Please highlight this story.

ICE stormed into the wrong house, trashed the place, and made women/girls stand outside in the rain in their underwear. ICE also stole phones, laptops, and cash savings from the family, who moved to OKC two weeks ago.
