There was a time when people sat in darkened theatres and thought to themselves, "what have George and Ira Gershwin got for us tonight?" Or "Can Cole Porter pull it off again?" Can you imagine? Now it's "Please, Elton John, must we continue this charade?”

media elites have talked themselves into a weird bind, where liberalism is so much the default that simultaneously a) it doesn't need defending but also b) any defeat no matter how marginal must refute it completely
Douthat writes that 2024, when Harris lost by 1.5% of the popular vote, was "an ideological referendum and progressivism lost." I wonder why he didn't view the 2020 election, when Trump lost by 4.5% of the popular vote, as a far more significant loss for conservatism.

Comparing the relation between the presidential election results in 2020 and 2024 with the post-election commentary is a fascinating exercise.

2020
Biden 81,283,501 popular votes, 51.3%
Trump 74,223,975 popular votes 46.8%

2024
Trump 77,302,580 49.8%
Harris 75,017,613. 48.3%

I was told on here she said the literal exact opposite and it‘s reached the point where if you all said Kamala thought water was wet, I’d double check the records.
Kamala Harris on Mamdani: Look, as far as I'm concerned, he's the democratic nominee and he should be supported.

I /like/ Mamdani but I do not like how he gets wielded like a cudgel constantly, getting stuff like this where you become the enemy even if you say you support him but not with the right words or enthusiastically enough

Russian state-controlled media outlets and allied social media accounts have seized on the killing of Charlie Kirk to push narratives that favor the Kremlin and aim to divide Americans, researchers say.
Russia leverages Kirk shooting for propaganda as false claims surge
Researchers say state-controlled media outlets in Russia and elsewhere have sought to use the conservative influencer’s killing to amplify divisions in the U.S.

Remembering how Jon Stewart spent all of last year telling me that he’d grown more nuanced and wise after his retirement and that Trump v Dems wasn’t as black and white as people claimed. What a ridiculous fuckwad he turned out to be.

We don't yet have any idea what the ideology of the Kirk shooter was.

But we do know that the Denver school shooter was a far-right white supremacist.

Armed with a revolver, the 16-year-old shooter systematically reloaded and fired as he wandered the school, trying to find new targets, police say.

I’ve posted this before, but the GOP-led US senate report shows the core allegations of russiagate are fundamentally true, and the right wing has been working for years to obfuscate that in the public eye www.intelligence.senate.gov/2020/08/18/p...

So MSNBC reportedly fired Matthew Dowd tonight just hours after Jesse Watters called for his "immediate" termination over his Charlie Kirk shooting comments.

Meanwhile, Watters said he's going to "avenge" Kirk's death because "they are at war with us" -- and he'll face no repercussions from Fox.

the answer to "why has the supreme court gone insane" is the same as the answer to "why has elon musk gone insane" is the same as the answer to "why has my uncle gone insane" which is that people mostly mirror the prevailing beliefs in their social environment and they're immersed in nazi media

Also both Lincoln and FDR were pretty dishonest about why they were committed to the wars they fought because both had considerably loftier personal ideals than most of the men they were sending to fight
I think now, 80 years later, we can admit that liberal propaganda dramatically overhyped the actual danger Germany posed to the USA

really remarkable how clear eyed Pritzker is about all this
Pritzker: "I refuse to pretend that any of this is normal ... I refuse to fall into the pundit trap that demands we sacrifice vital constitutional rights if it's being done in the fake guise of fighting crime."

If we’re going to do this, I guess it’s good to do it early while he’s weak, but it’s surreal. It’s surreal that we were a stable and incredibly wealthy country and we’re going to tear ourselves apart so conservatives don’t have to admit they went insane and elected a criminal madman. Never forgive
That Pritzker press conference was... surreal, and I think marks a significant moment of escalation in the constitutional omni-crisis. This was the governor of a state saying plainly the Union itself is being torn apart and his state is being militarily invaded by an authoritarian regime.

At one point 70% of Americans didn't know Democrats passed a $1,000,000,000,000.00 infrastructure and climate bill.

Figures.

We tried parroting Russian propaganda and telling Ukraine to bow down. We tried denigrating European allies and refusing to discuss real security guarantees. We tried rolling out the red carpet for Putin and saying we deserved a Nobel Prize for that. Now we’re “seriously considering stepping back.”
Kind of amazing how many analysts and scholars wasted 100 000s of wordcount worth of credibility in taking the incoherent flailing of an incompetent administration that is rapidly paralysing the US seriously
