Quite a lot can be explained by the plain fact that our leaders and their hangers on are *enraged* that they can’t send people to prison for doing things that aren’t illegal, and they see this as a very serious problem that needs to be resolved, urgently.

If this is paranoid then I am also paranoid. They can pitch it to the environmentally-minded as "more efficient" than individual instances (it isn't), and argue that subscription fees are more affordable than upfront hardware costs (irrelevant). It doesn't look good if things keep going that way
Maybe this is a paranoid take, but making it impossible for consumers to run their own software locally is intentionally forcing a shift to cloud computing/using LLMs to do basically everything, and this in turn is a conscious effort to establish a tech-driven return to feudalism

I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.
