I've been thinking a lot about this comic lately, especially its take on "institutions." It goes both ways: the oppressive institutions are often more brittle than they look, but so also are the ones you rely on for safety, health, stability, job security, etc. www.viruscomix.com/page528.html

Think of morality in terms of stairs-- whatever we do enables us to then easily do something one step beyond that. Don't ask "should i do this," ask "do i want to be somewhere a few steps from here," because *that's* what may eventually seem exactly as reasonable as what you're considering now.

An interesting thing reading about trade is that very few economists, left, right, center, are opposed to it. When they are, it's often due to a kind of meta-economics or public psychology. That is, the numbers say that tech is the job-killer, but regular people almost always blame off-shoring.

This is one of my favorite comedies of any era and my favorite kind of humor: taking a simple-but-absurd premise beyond its natural conclusion.

"Sultans of Swing" is the only song I can think of that 1) has a genre of music in the title but 2) the song itself is not in that genre.

Are there any other examples of this?

I use canary deliberately here because this stuff kills canaries first, but it kills miners just as surely.

If you can see trans people around you thriving, that is an inevitable consequence of these liberties!

If you stop seeing trans people, get to clean air as fast as possible
If you're cis, trans people are your coalmine canary for a collection of civil liberties.

PRIVACY: do you owe everyone you meet a full medical history?
