There's an ongoing discussion in the art world about how it is vulnerable to slop because so much "art" created under capitalist incentives is already slop. I think there's some of that here too. Bullshit Jobs may be replaceable by AI, but not b/c AI is good, but because we have produced bad jobs...
What I mean by "hype being true" is that the models actually *are* able to replace millions of workers - which is the core economic promise that tech oligarchs are making.
I understand why people are exhausted by AI hype, and why those of us squarely in the corner of "human dignity uber alles" see AI doomerism as self-serving hype, but I *really* think people on the left broadly need to start thinking seriously about the possibiltiy of the hype being...true.

One of the weirdest things about the last ~15 years has been watching humans discover ways our own brains are broken via non-stop A/B testing and data. E.g. apparently since the dawn of times what kids really want to watch is disembodied hands opening packages while a mommy voice describes it.
The Reels ecosystem is fascinating, and can't possibly be healthy. Some common themes:

- Security videos of cryptids/demons scaring people

- Impossibly high cliff jumps going wrong

- Impossibly fat people falling over and breaking things

When reading this article, consider the median average revenue of a single McDonald's location in 2021 was $3.3 million. There are four RPG companies in the world that bring in meaningfully more money than a single McDonald's. Lots of incredible companies bring in way less than a single McDonald's.

Fun fact! The Form of Curry, the oldest cookbook in the English language, contains several times “cowe mylke” to distinguish it from the also common “almaunde mylke”. Referring to plant milk as milk predates Shakespeare.

I really do think this is an excellent metaphor for the moment.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

My favorite artifact in the "you don't need AI to do art" discourse is, of course, screenwriter Dan O'Bannon's sketch of the facehugger to explain it to Giger.

Probably the weirdest bit of culinary history to me is that despite eggs, vegetable oil, mustard, and lemon all being Old World ingredients, mayonnaise was somehow not invented until the 18th century. It seems like something the Romans would have figured out!
